Sign in to your ScreenRant account The Lord of the Rings is, thankfully, still getting numerous spin-offs and new projects, some of which successfully resonate with fans and others that slink off into the dark corners of obscurity to be forgotten forever. However, regardless of quality, it's hard to deny that the constant influx of LOTR-related media is a good thing, especially as these projects continue to entertain an ever-growing fanbase and sustain an IP that could very easily fade away should it be left uncared-for. The latest in a long line of new Lord of the Rings spin-offs is The King's Gambit, a truly ambitious and absolutely massive project that will appeal to those who have been hoping for more immersive experiences within the world of Middle-earth. The King's Gambit is definitely one to keep your eye on if you're a fan of LOTR games, as this is no simple piece of merchandise or cheaply made board game, but rather an expansive new tabletop experience that will likely blow dedicated fans away. The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit is a tabletop adaptation of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields as the forces of Rohan and Gondor band together to repel the dark forces of Sauron. It features miniatures, 3D models of the iconic Minas Tirith, Mount Doom, assorted other terrain, cards, dice, and so much more, all of which coalesce to deliver a hugely ambitious board game experience in which the events of this epic final battle play out. You'll control the forces of Rohan and Gondor as they fight their respective battles across the Pelennor Fields and Minas Tirith, as well as Aragorn and company as they defend the Port Town, and Frodo and Sam, who bravely ascend Mount Doom to throw the ring into the fire. All of this is represented by a huge number of miniatures and controlled by dice and cards with unique abilities. The fate of this legendary battle lies in the hands of the players as they fight for control and, ultimately, the destiny of Middle-earth. The King's Gambit was successfully crowdfunded via Kickstarter, with the project managing to raise a staggering $2,576,794 from across 8,325 backers. The premise and trailer alone likely helped, but so too did its developer's pedigree for producing high-quality IP-based board game experiences. Restoration Games has previously made a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game as well as a Godzilla one, to name a few, and thus has plenty of experience within this field. Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit is set to be shipped to backers in October 2027. A retail launch is likely to follow shortly after. If you're interested, late pledges for Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit remain open via its official Kickstarter page. This is, of course, not the only ambitious LOTR board game to be crowdfunded as of late, but it is perhaps the biggest in terms of components. The scale of this is staggering, which is why it isn't terribly surprising that you'll need to fork over $199 for the cheapest tier. However, if you absolutely love Lord of the Rings and have been looking for a brand-new board game experience set within Middle-earth, this could be the project for you.
