Sign in to your ScreenRant account The Lord of the Rings' iconography and identity were seemingly cemented by the Peter Jackson films back in 2001, a look largely inspired by the art of Alan Lee. Since then, there have, of course, been tweaks and changes, but, for the most part, the look has remained the same, with the Dwarven, Elvish, Orcish, Human, and Hobbit factions alike all retaining the same general aesthetic and appearance that Jackson and co. established with the first film. Naturally, then, fans aren't ever really expecting a character's look to change. However, with new Lord of the Rings projects releasing all the time, there is always the possibility for a character to be redesigned, or a faction's whole identity to be altered, if only slightly. Well, one new LOTR project has completely changed the look of Gandalf, and in such a way that some fans may not be best pleased. While this redesign probably shouldn't be taken all too seriously, it's a fun reinterpretation of Gandalf that showcases what could have been. Fans recently got their first look at Ian McKellen's Gandalf in Hunt for Gollum and, to no one's surprise, despite being a little more wizened in his years, the character looks largely the same. However, the same cannot be said for the latest figurine of the character McKellen so flawlessly brought to life. Indeed, the latest line of Lord of the Rings Asmus Collectibles reimagines the Fellowship in chibi form, adorable, truncated versions of themselves with large heads and bulging eyes. While this approach works rather well for the likes of Frodo and Legolas, the same can not be said for Gandalf. The big beard, bulbous nose, and beady eyes make the once largely friendly wizard appear far colder in appearance, as if he is perpetually prepared to scold Frodo. It isn't a terrible look for the character, but it's understandable why fans may not prefer it over some of the other Lord of the Rings collectibles made available over the years. However, should this appeal to you, it can be pre-ordered via the official Asmus Collectibles website. The current crop of figures available for pre-order is Series 2, which features five distinct characters, including the aforementioned Gandalf. If you opt to buy the full set, you'll get a figure of Frodo, Legolas, Gandalf, an Uruk-hai, and a Uruk with a crossbow. These join the previous set, Series 1, which included Aragorn, Arwen, Gimli, Lurtz, and Nazgul. Each figure comes in its own box, with a stand and accompanying accessories. They have 2 to 4 points of articulation, so you can pose them however you'd like. The full set costs $120, which works out to $24 per figure. To pre-order it, you'll just need to put down a deposit of $20 and pay the remaining balance later before it ships. There is currently no shipping date listed on the website. It's always fun to get novel redesigns of Lord of the Rings characters, even if they don't always work, if only to help keep things feeling fresh.
