Thankfully, a new DLC just leaked that might offer a more challenging experience for veteran players. MrCheeze, a dataminer who specializes in reverse engineering, posted a list of strings to Bluesky after some digging. Pictured below, you can see several lines they uncovered that are tagged 'MQ'—listed next to Dodongo Cavern. They followed up in the comments with yet another finding: "HasMQ, IsMQModeExist, NewGameMQ, ReleaseMQ." What Master Quest Changes MQ almost certainly stands for 'Master Quest'—originally a bonus disc for Ocarina of Time, and later packaged with the 3DS launch. It's a separate mode that completely overhauls the base game's dungeons to make them more challenging. Mini-bosses are encountered earlier, optional items are made mandatory, and layouts altered, meaning that you can no longer rely on memory to progress through the game. As broken down by @OatmealDome on X, it's currently referred to in the files as DLC, but "the data is incomplete." So far, they've only found references to MQ affecting dungeons, not the overworld. But those changes line up with the 3DS version of Master Quest. "I can confirm that the world is mirrored and dungeons are modified (e.g. cows in Jabu-Jabu's Belly)," they said. The 3DS version of Master Quest required you to beat the game before it could be unlocked, and lining up with @OatmealDome's findings, it completely mirrored the game. Enemies and bosses also dealt double damage, making it an even more challenging experience than the original GameCube version. Series producer Eiji Aonuma previously stated in an interview with IGN that "I don't think we would announce anything specific at this time" when asked if Master Quest would be implemented in the Switch 2 remake, but these leaks at least point to Nintendo considering it. Whether MQ is actually implemented is another question entirely, as this may simply be leftover code from a scrapped idea, rather than concrete plans. It's also unclear from the leaks whether it will be a free launch, as with the 3DS version, or a paid bonus. Master Quest was a popular request ahead of the Ocarina of Time remake's launch, so it's reassuring to see that the team are at least experimenting with the idea.
