Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell are two of the biggest players in Netflix's Jurassic World series, and this dinosaur show fixes the main problem of the modern Jurassic World movies. Many sci-fi movie franchises have stood the test of time as classics that inspire new generations and continue to this day with exciting new releases. Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, and more fit the bill. The Jurassic Park franchise is one of those that helped define theaters and generations of filmmakers and moviegoers. Given just how popular it is and how profitable every Jurassic movie tends to be, there is no end in sight for the franchise's new releases. It began with one of the best Steven Spielberg movies, 1993's Jurassic Park, and has since moved on to the new Jurassic World chapter of the franchise. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard led the first Jurassic World trilogy, while Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali took over for 2025's Jurassic World Rebirth. That said, there is a key problem with these four Jurassic World movies, and it just so happens that one of the TV shows on Netflix's library found the perfect way of fixing that. Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. The Netflix series in question is Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, an animated dinosaur series set within the iconic sci-fi franchise and even featuring characters from the movies. That said, the show's main focus is on a group of teenagers, including Ortega's Brooklynn, who are stranded on Isla Nublar when Jurassic World falls. Powell voices the charismatic camp counselor Dave. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous teaches the movies a lesson. The Jurassic World Movies Lost The Suspense That Made Jurassic Park So Terrifying What the Jurassic World movies need to learn from the Netflix animated series is how to properly develop characters that are multi-dimensional and bring back the intense suspense when it comes to the dinosaurs. Spielberg's first Jurassic Park movie went harder on the horror direction, making the dinosaur action work around the suspense of whether they would catch the humans, teasing viewers with shadows, sounds, and such. The Jurassic World movie franchise has mostly left that behind in favor of going big. These are major blockbusters more focused on huge set pieces, with a spectacle over nuance approach. Sure, there are some moments in this modern chapter of the dinosaur movie franchise that try to veer into that Spielberg Jurassic Park territory, most of which can be found in J. A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. However, there is no denying that with characters like Pratt's Owen Grady as a bona fide action hero thrust into the Jurassic World franchise, the scales of action and suspense are not evenly matched. The main characters of the original Jurassic Park trilogy were all paleontologists/mathematicians and such. Pratt's Velociraptor trainer Owen, Johansson's mercenary Zora Bennett, and more are notably more action-oriented characters than their predecessors. Jenna Ortega & Glen Powell's Camp Cretaceous Brings Jurassic Park's Survival Horror Back Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous might be a show for younger viewers focused on a group of kids, but it works directly against the Jurassic World movies' approach. Ortega and Powell's Camp Cretaceous is all about survival, and the dinosaurs are seen as terrifying threats the show's characters need to learn how to navigate around over five seasons. There are even some genuine horror scenarios in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, such as everything the Netflix Jurassic World series does with the Scorpios Rex, that beat most of the scariest moments in the live-action movies. There is also the fact that with five seasons of deep character development, viewers just feel more strongly about the safety of Camp Cretaceous' characters than most of the Jurassic World players. The Jurassic World trilogy mostly swapped casts around Pratt and Howard, not creating deep bonds with others. Had characters like Claire's nephews, Ty Simpkins' Gray Mitchell and Nick Robinson's Zach Mitchell, stayed for the long run, perhaps the films would have managed to get closer to Camp Cretaceous in that regard. Now, Johansson's Jurassic World franchise has the chance of upping the suspense and character development, learning from the Netflix series.
