Over 70 years ago, Godzilla helped kickstart the giant monster genre in film, and while many of the works to follow would lean more into sci-fi and action spectacle, there are still plenty of Godzilla stories that choose to emphasize the unrelenting horror of Godzilla’s original premise, all of which are a sight to behold. Even after so many decades, horror is always where Godzilla shines the brightest, and nowhere is that more apparent than with the latest Godzilla comic from IDW, The Horror of Godzilla. A prequel to the ongoing “Kai-Sei Era” of Godzilla comics, The Horror of Godzilla reimagines the original Godzilla movie as a straightforward horror story as opposed to a monster story with horror elements, and with how wildly different the interpretation of the eponymous creature ends up being, it’s already proving to be a Godzilla story for the ages that everyone needs to read. Godzilla Has Never Been More Horrifying Than In The Horror Of Godzilla Much of the horror of The Horror of Godzilla comes from one simple factor: its realism. The Horror of Godzilla brings Godzilla back to his roots as a metaphor for the destruction brought to Japan by the atomic bombs, and sure enough, every page detailing Godzilla’s destruction of Tokyo puts incredible emphasis on the carnage he’s bringing about and the fear he’s instilling in a populace that doesn’t understand anything. It’s very similar to what modern Godzilla stories like Shin Godzilla and Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One did, and it’s just as effective here, if not more so. What’s even more frightening, though, is the story’s use of the Kai-Sei Era’s iconic Kai-Sei Energy. Kai-Sei Energy has always been depicted as something that could be dangerous if used improperly, and sure enough, The Horror of Godzilla #1 makes Kai-Sei Energy horrifying when Godzilla uses it to create an acid rain that turns anyone it touches into a horrifying monster, with some even resembling Godzilla himself. That could be another metaphor for the atomic bombs, specifically the effects of nuclear radiation, but even without that, it’s one of the most grotesque depictions of Godzilla ever to be seen. The Horror Of Godzilla Is Already One Of The Best Godzilla Stories Of The Year The Horror of Godzilla only has a single issue to its name, but it’s already proving to be an amazing Godzilla story. Not only is the more grounded and serious take on Godzilla as refreshing as ever, but the way the story emphasizes how horrifying something like Godzilla would be is incredibly fun, especially with how great a job series artist Tristan Jones does of conveying how monstrous an entity Godzilla is. That, when combined with Griffin Sheridan and Ethan S. Parker’s brilliant script, results in a story that succeeds in every regard, and it’s only going to get better.
