The Hindu-VIT Biotech Conclave in Chennai discusses new frontiers in science

Jothi Ramalingam The Biotech Conclave 2026, organised by VIT Chennai in association with The Hindu, was inaugurated at Taj Connemara, Chennai, on Friday (September 11, 2026), bringing together academics, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss developments in biotechnology and life sciences.Themed ‘Exploring New Frontiers in Science’, the conclave focuses on biomedical research, drug discovery, healthcare technologies, biotechnology innovation, and translating scientific research into applications.The inaugural session was attended by N. Ram, director, The Hindu Group, and L.V. Navaneeth, CEO, The Hindu. It was presided over by G. Viswanathan, founder and chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), with Suchitra Ella, co-founder and managing director, Bharat Biotech and CII President-Designate, as chief guest.Welcoming the gathering, Suresh Nambath, editor, The Hindu, said the sessions were structured to focus on scientific theory and its practical applications, including the fundamentals of precision medicine, and urged participants to engage with the speakers.VIT vice-president G.V. Selvam spoke about the institute’s focus on emerging opportunities in innovation and drug discovery. Dr. Viswanathan stressed the importance of gene and precision editing and called for greater focus on education, research, and researchers in India.Vaccine development in IndiaDr. Ella, delivering the inaugural address, spoke about India’s shift from relying on vaccines and molecules developed in the West to building its own research and manufacturing capabilities. She said Indian companies should look beyond the domestic market and develop products for other developing countries, particularly for infectious diseases. She also emphasised championing a ‘One Health’ approach, and strengthening the links between life sciences and food security.Mr. Ram highlighted the contributions of Dr. Viswanathan to education and scientific institution-building, and Dr. Ella to vaccine development and public health.
