He became a full-time cartoonist in 1980, when The San Francisco Chronicle retitled his cartoon Nature's Way as The Far Side and agreed to publish it daily. For some time, the Chronicle was The Far Side's only home, but eventually it began to spread to other papers in syndication. In 1982, "Cow Tools" became an early meme, garnering media attention and leading to an explosion of The Far Side's popularity. During that time, Larson traveled and tried out other creative pursuits, including jamming with some of his favorite musicians. The financial success of The Far Side in the 1980s enabled this break, just like it eventually allowed the artist to end the cartoon completely a few years later. There are other creative projects from Gary Larson that have surely never seen the light of day in the past 30+ years. Larson doesn't promote himself much, or maintain a strong online presence, but it's hard to imagine he hasn't kept busy. Far Side fans, new and old, will always wish there were more of his cartoons, but the prolific catalog he left behind is also more than enough to cherish. There's the classic line, "it's better to burn out than to fade away." Gary Larson's career was cut short by burnout, but that also seems to be how he wanted it.
