With Bethesda finally confirming the long-rumored Fallout 3 Remaster was finally in development, fans were over the moon to finally have an excuse to return to the 2008 Bethesda RPG, albeit with a well-needed makeover. In work alongside a remaster of Fallout: New Vegas, the long wait has finally paid off for revamps of some of the greatest RPGs of all time, and now, the Fallout 3 Remaster has just received a very exciting update. Although an official release date for both the upcoming Fallout remasters has not been revealed, a recent interview on the YouTube channel The Examined Game has shed some light on Fallout 3's progress over the years. This news comes courtesy of Nate Purkeypile, a former Bethesda developer who previously worked on Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, as well as being the lead artist for Fallout 76. Now, Purkeypile is an independent artist currently working on The Axis Unseen, an FPS which launched back in 2024, but he recently spoke with The Examined Game about his time at Bethesda. When asked about the recent news of Bethesda finally announcing the Fallout 3 Remaster, Purkeypile said, "I'm personally looking forward to that, because we were like super tech-constrained making Fallout 3. And you could only place so many lights." However, he also explained that the original launch of Fallout 3 back in 2008 was not how the developers initially intended. "I get why people are more upset over like movie remakes and stuff, but in the case of games and particularly the art side of it, it's 100% not what we intended, and it was very, very constrained," he explained. Over the years, many Fallout fans have gazed longingly at Fallout 3 concept art drawn by Adam Adamowicz, showing what could have been for the hit RPG. However, thanks to a remaster, Purkeypile admits that ideas such as this could finally be implemented after all these years. "I think a lot of these remakes have been done frankly better lately too," he explained. "Like the Resident Evil ones and stuff, those were fantastic. Whereas for a while I think a lot of those updates were just like, 'Oh, we made the textures a little bit bigger, and like threw a sharpen filter in Photoshop,' and it doesn't really look that much better, or actually as good as other games that are coming out." It seems as though former Fallout developers are onboard with this upcoming Fallout 3 Remaster, so we can only hope that it will join the likes of the stunning remakes and remasters we have received in recent years.
