Ow. This one hurts. Sir Patrick Stewart, a cultural icon and all-around good frickin’ guy, has passed away at the age of 86. A classically trained actor, he was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Later generations would also know him as Professor Xavier in the X-Men movies, and his reprisal of the role in this December’s Avengers: Doomsday could be his last movie appearance. But I knew him as Aelius Sejanus, the vicious and ambitious praetorian guard in the BBC production of I, Claudius. He had hair then, and even though he played a relatively minor role, when he was on, he stole that show. It was a hoot to see a guy I typically associated with do-gooders play a villain with the same exacting gravitas he lent to his hero roles. The internet is awash in tributes to the man, and as I share them here, I do so through a vision-clouding veil of tears. The Shakespeare-themed ones hit particularly hard. Considering his role in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, I can hear this one in his voice. Mood. Yes Star Trek, Yes X-Men, but I cannot tell you what it meant to see Patrick Stewart in Jeffrey in 1995. To have someone at the top of a hugely popular science fiction franchise appear in an indie comedy about gay men with AIDS meant so much to me as a closeted teen. youtu.be/9sJX85xfzkE?… — David Levy (@itsdlevy.me) 2026-10-29T20:07:48.499Z In honor of our captain, one of my favorite candid moments: giving his partner an impromptu acting lesson while stoned out of his gourd. Godspeed, Sir Patrick. The stage will never be the same. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BV1… — G. O no, it is an ever-fixèd mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark, Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken. 💔 — James Whitbrook (@jwhitbrook.bsky.social) 2026-10-29T20:41:39.497Z A beautiful thread on just how fucking cool this guy was. Patrick Stewart story that I've told before: He did a few performances with The Improvised Shakespeare Company, one in New York (for about 15 minutes of the show) and one full show in Chicago. It was the upstairs at iO in Wrigleyville – maybe 100 seats. Nobody knew he would be there. — Chuck (translucent) (@mrcott.bsky.social) 2026-10-29T20:15:01.874Z Like cool cool.
