The ending of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ explained: what happens to Peter Parker?

Marvel’s web slinger is an anonymous loner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Jean is being held by the DODC who are experimenting on her brain, just like they did with her sister Sara, in an attempt to harness her power. Grey discovers “V-Max” is written on a vent above her cell, which is the last thing Sara saw before she died. In her anger, Grey grows more powerful and blasts an energy wave across the city, immobilising people in the near vicinity. Recommended After a fight with The Hand, who have been possessed by Jean, Peter arrives at Jean’s location – where she’s on the verge of killing Bill with levitating shards of glass. However, Peter allows Jean into his mind, where she observes a heart-to-heart with his aunt May Parker. In the scene, May tells Peter (and in this scenario, Jean) that she accepts him for who he is, even though he has superpowers – restoring her faith in humanity. This memory calms Jean down, but Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) fires a sniper shot at Jean from another building. Peter intercepts the shot, taking the bullet in the back. Peter wakes up in hospital next to Frank, who tells him that Jean kept him alive until the medical crew arrived. In order to leave the hospital without drawing attention, Frank puts on the Spider-Man mask and poses at the window, as Peter slips through the crowds. Following the incident, we see Jean on a coach leaving the city. The DODC, meanwhile, is facing an investigation over its crimes. What happens in the final scene? He approaches him as Peter, and Ned recognises him as the person who brought flowers to the house party. Peter shakes his hand and, in the moment, Ned automatically goes into their secret handshake – something they used to do before Ned’s memory was wiped. This suggests Ned has some dormant memories of their past friendship. What happens in the post-credits scene? The post-credits scene shows Ned’s Spidey tracker app, which has identified the whereabouts of Spider-Man. It shows Spider-Man in New York as normal, but then it glitches, zooms out of Earth, and the tracker pins his location to a spot in outer space. A title card pops up, which reads: “Spider-Man will return.” While it’s unclear when Spider-Man will return, the assumption is he’ll be involved in the fight against Doctor Doom, whether in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
