The DeWalt DCW210 Isn’t the Fastest Sander—but It’s the One I Trust the Most

4 min readEvery once in a while, a tool finds a permanent spot in my rotation not because it’s the biggest, baddest, or most powerful option out there. Instead, I come to trust it because it doesn’t give me a reason not to. That's basically the relationship I’ve developed over the years with the DeWalt DCW210 Random Orbital Sander.Ironically, I didn’t buy it because I was searching for the world’s greatest orbital sander. I bought it because I’d finally had enough of the corded Ridgid model I’d been using for years. The Ridgid actually sanded well, but whoever designed it and placed its power switch didn’t seem to have spent much time using it. During long sanding sessions, I’d constantly bump the switch with my fingers and accidentally shut the tool off. When I realized the DCW210 was included in a DeWalt combo kit with several other tools I wanted—like DeWalt’s jigsaw and oscillating tool–the decision practically made itself. Rather than buy another corded sander and keep dragging extension cords around the shop, I made the jump to cordless. And although I’ve tested and used many of the best sanders we recommend, this is still the one that goes everywhere with me.A Reliable, Everyday SanderLet’s get one thing out of the way: If you’re looking for the sander that removes stock the fastest, check out our best overall choice, the Makita BO5030K. If tons of features are your thing, give a look to the Bosch GEX18V. The DeWalt probably won’t scratch either of those itches. But here’s what the DeWalt does exceptionally well: It’s reliable, comfortable, and easy to use day in and day out. Those aren’t the flashiest qualities on a spec sheet, but they explain why I keep reaching for this sander over the faster ones collecting some dust on my tool shelf.The brushless motor has more than enough power for virtually every woodworking project I tackle. The variable-speed dial, adjustable from 8,000 to 12,000 oscillations per minute (OPM), lets me slow things down for finish sanding or turn it up when removing more material, and the motor maintains its speed under load so the finish stays consistent without ever feeling like the tool is struggling.Lightweight, Balanced, and Easy to ControlOne of the first things you notice when you pick it up is just how light it feels. At roughly 2.6 pounds without the battery, it’s among the lightest cordless sanders in its class—a detail that matters far more in practice than it does when you’re simply researching options. During a five-minute project, a tool that weighs a few ounces more than average won’t make much difference. During a full hour of sanding doors, tabletops, or trim, however, lighter weight translates directly into less strain on your hands, wrists, and shoulders. That was my experience when I decided to repaint all of the doors in my house last year. It’s simply a comfortable tool to use.The ergonomics deserve just as much credit. The low-profile design keeps your hand close to the work surface, giving you excellent control over a tool that never feels top-heavy. The rubber overmold provides a secure grip, vibrations never get out of hand, and—best of all—the power switch tucked below the grip is a deep-press activation button as opposed to the simple rocker switch of my former sander. I’ve never accidentally shut this sander off, which still makes me appreciate it every time I use it.The One Thing This Sander is MissingThe one notable omission with this sander is that it doesn’t include a shop vac adapter in the box. Once you add one, though, the dust collection system is genuinely impressive. Connected to a shop vac, the DCW210 captures an impressive amount of fine dust, helping to keep both your workspace and the air noticeably cleaner. Even the included dust bag is better than most, locking securely in place, holding plenty of debris, and removing easily when it’s time to empty it.Dust collection doesn’t get much attention, but it should. Less airborne dust means less cleanup and a better finish because you’re not grinding loose particles back into the surface. And, of course, it’s better for your lung health, as well.Final ThoughtsThe sander’s battery life has also been excellent, which is something I’ve come to expect from all of DeWalt’s cordless tools. With a compact 5-amp-hour battery installed, I’ve completed multiple tabletop refinishing projects and plenty of smaller DIY jobs before even thinking about swapping in a fresh battery. The efficiency of the brushless motor usually means I’m ready for a break long before the battery is.What surprises me most is how often this sander still ends up in my hand despite having access to plenty of others that are faster or, thanks to a deep collection of features, potentially capable of a wider variety of tasks, like Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel sander. Yet this is the one that’s almost always either riding in the bed of my truck or sitting within arm’s reach in the shop because I know exactly what I’m getting every time I pick it up.I don’t baby this tool, either. It gets tossed into the truck, dropped onto concrete, and knocked around in my rolling toolbox. That’s the reality of how tools get treated when they’re actually used, and after years of abuse, the DCW210 has never given me a reason to replace it.
