The Boys’ Homelander Star Reinvents An Iconic Hero In New Movie

An iconic hero is getting a new look in a movie featuring Antony Starr. Starr is best known for playing the arrogant, entitled, petulant, and powerful villain Homelander in Prime Video's hit series The Boys, which released its final season earlier this year. The show, which is based on the Garth Ennis comics of the same name, subverts and parodies tropes regarding heroes and superpowers, with Homelander having the facade of being a Superman-like figure while actually being an unstable and dangerous villain. According to Variety, Starr has now joined the new Robin Hood movie The Lie of Sherwood Forest, which, per the official description, reinvents the hero and his familiar tale into a "grounded, hard-hitting fight for survival, loyalty and justice, bringing a contemporary edge to one of storytelling’s most enduring figures.” Thomasin McKenzie, Finn Cole, Smylie Bradwell, Brian Vernel, and Richard Durden have also been cast, but who each of the actors is playing remains under wraps. In this version of the story, a young woman tricks Robin Hood and his companions into rescuing her captive brother, a mission that transforms into a dangerous heist. As they challenge those in power, the characters are faced with difficult choices amid loyalty breaking and secret motives coming to light, with the synopsis emphasizing that "what begins as one desperate lie will inadvertently change the course of the legend forever." If Starr is playing Robin Hood, and if this depiction of the character is ultimately heroic, it would be a major shift for the actor after portraying Homelander for five seasons of The Boys, along with episodes of the spinoffs Gen V and Diabolical. This would involve him going from one of the most iconic modern villains to a classic hero, although the latter is being touted as different from what has been done before. He may also be playing one of Robin Hood's companions, the Sheriff of Nottingham, or someone else entirely. The Lie of Sherwood Forest begins filming on November 9. It is a German production directed by Patrick Vollrath and written by Harris Kauffman, based on a story by Vollrath and Joachim Hedén. Logical Pictures International and Protagonist Pictures are responsible for sales as the film launches at the American Film Market, at which movies are sold, financed, and acquired for distribution. Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, shared that "The Lie of Sherwood Forest is a radical new take of one of the world’s most enduring legends, reinvented as a bold, visceral and relentlessly propulsive film. Patrick Vollrath will deliver an electrifying cinematic vision to a story that turns mythology on its head, combining gripping set pieces with genuine moral complexity.” Andrei Kamarowsky, head of international at Logical Pictures Group, promised that the movie "will ultimately reshape the myth. It remains true to the spirit of the original folklore while bringing a fresh perspective, real emotional stakes, and unrelenting tension.” Other than The Lie of Sherwood Forest, after the ending of The Boys, Starr joined the Netflix television series Breakers and the Jean-Michel Basquiat biopic Samo Lives, the latter of which sees him in the role of Andy Warhol. As for his new co-stars, McKenzie's most recent credit is The Uprising, and she previously starred in The Testament of Ann Lee, Pantheon, Last Night in Soho, The Power of the Dog, Old, Jojo Rabbit, and Leave No Trace. Cole is known for Peaky Blinders, Animal Kingdom, and Last Breath. The Boys franchise is continuing on without Antony Starr through Vought Rising, a prequel series set in the 1950s centered on the character's father, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), and Stormfront (Aya Cash) in the eponymous corporation's early days of supes and as a murder mystery unfolds. It has wrapped filming and is slated to premiere in 2027. Birthdate October 25, 1975 Birthplace Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand Height 5 feet 11 inches Professions Actor
