The biggest style change Myf Warhurst has made since entering her sixth decade

Ahead, she documents her style journey, including her favourite designers, and why she loves channelling the style of a “1970s art teacher”.Myf Warhurst says she is learning to wear less black in her 50s.I’d describe my style as ever-evolving. I feel like I’ve been a different person at every stage of my life. I’m from Melbourne, so I’ve got a lot of black in my wardrobe, but that’s changing; I’m leaning more into burgundies, reds and chocolate browns. I’m in my 50s now, so maybe it’s the first step towards wearing bonkers bright colours and mixing patterns.The oldest thing in my wardrobe is a yellow A-line mini dress my mum made in the ’60s. The most recent addition is a dress by Scandinavian label Helsa in those burgundy and brown colours I’m loving.On a plane, I wear a nice wool pant and a jumper because it’s always freezing. On the red carpet, if money was no object, I’d wear Schiaparelli. What Daniel Roseberry is doing there is mind-blowing. His pieces are works of art.My favourite fashion era is the ’70s. I love a turtleneck and a beautiful boot – I think it goes back to wanting to look like a glamorous 1970s art teacher. I love the ’80s, too. The hair was ridiculous and the shoulder pads were huge. It was excessive and I love that.My favourite designer is Ganni – it’s casual with an edge. And my fragrance of choice is Tom Ford’s “Neroli Portofino”.Three essential items in my wardrobe are a turtleneck, a corduroy jean and black faux-fur jacket. Anything floral, flowy or frilly looks ridiculous on me, but I love a statement earring. Melanie Katsalidis’ Pieces of Eight Gallery has incredibly beautiful things from local makers.My favourite outfit in kindergarten was a denim overall dress with big red buttons and a striped skivvy underneath.My first fashion moment was wearing a red velvet dress, made by my mother, to my formal. It was very Madonna [and her song], La Isla Bonita. I wore it with red shoes that had a bow on the heel – quite fashionable for Mildura at the time.My biggest fashion mistake was having blue-black hair and a blunt fringe in the ’90s. I wanted to look like Béatrice Dalle in Betty Blue, but I looked more like the Lego lady. I wish people made more fashion mistakes. Everyone trying to be appropriate all the time means we all look a bit the same.The shoes I wear most are pointy, kitten-heel boots – I never feel appropriately dressed in sneakers. I’m currently obsessed with E Nolan’s shoes; I’ll take any, but the peep-toe slingbacks and leopard pony pumps are at the top of my wish list.Attending last year’s Logies in Rachel Gilbert … one day she’d love to wear Schiaparelli.Getty ImagesMy favourite fashion icons are Betty Davis, the singer and songwriter (not Bette Davis, the actor), and Bianca Jagger, who always looked superb in the ’70s.On a typical working day, I’m usually at home in jeans and a nice top.
