The Best Hair on TV Is From ‘House of the Dragon’

The following article contains major spoilers for House of the Dragon season three, episode six, “Faceless Men.”“They will sing songs of it,” Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Chief Helmet of House of The Dragon, said last week. He was fantasizing about his own legendary, mythical dath in battle.Instead—stop reading now if you want to avoid spoilers or forever hold your peace—he died the less legendary way: via three arrows, one straight to the noggin. At what Mushroom called the “Butcher’s Ball,” he went out in the opening few minutes of season three, episode six in highly anticlimactic fashion. Not many people seem to be upset about it. Cole, you may recall, was a certified Big Loser. Prone to violent outbursts, weirdo acts of revenge and slut shaming, he was no one’s favorite character. We are mourning one thing, though. That head of hair. Oh, that glorious hair. See, at the start of the show, Cole’s dark brown locks were luscious. Proper Disney prince hair, center-parted and combed back and flopping just so. It was a kingly cut. We would file it under the “Swept Back” category, also rocked by Dev Patel. It’s laid-back and put-together all in one fell swoop. Doesn’t hurt that it sat atop the face card of Fabien Frankel, too.Of course, for season two, Cole cropped his hair, military style and turned it into a bog-standard crew cut, presumably hacked at with a blunt sword or maybe a rusty dagger. Obviously, Frankel still looked handsome as hell. But our rage-bait overlord had struck again. The Curly Boy Method was ditched, the salt spray was out and we were left with a villain who could not be vindicated by his barnet. Now, we have neither Cole nor his original hair. He’s kicked both lid and bucket. Adieu to both. Thankfully, though, Frankel’s IRL hair is basically Cole’s original hair, so you can still use him as an ongoing reference for your barber. And then, yes, they will sing songs of it.A version of this story originally appeared in British GQ.
