The Behind-The-Scenes For Resident Evil’s Most Shocking Scene Shows Exactly Why It’s So Terrifying

Zoë's love of superheroes and all things Marvel & DC started out in childhood, and has blossomed into a career getting to talk about some of the biggest and best movies and shows of all time, having previously focused on comics while working at WhatCulture. Resident Evil's new behind-the-scenes looks at the movie help show exactly what makes the film's most shocking scene so harrowing on-screen, by dissecting how it was made and custom-crafted to evoke a sense of horror. Resident Evil has already proven itself to be one of 2026's most successful horror movies, which is no surprise given how effectively it pulls off a range of truly harrowing scenes throughout its run. Whether it's someone exploding into a swarm of vicious rats, or an infected person who's an amalgam of other bodies joined together hunting protagonist Bryan down, there's no shortage of moments that are effective in creating pulse-raising tension in any section of the movie. This is doubly true because Resident Evil quickly displays that it's willing to go the distance with its horror, and that no dog, child, or main character is safe from the threats of its story. The way in which Resident Evil's story is built to garner tense moments is arguably best glimpsed in one of the last action scenes in the movie, which feels tense from the offset, and quickly dissolves into a nightmare action sequence that delivers us into the finale of Resident Evil itself. Excitingly, a new behind-the-scenes reveal of how this scene was set up further illustrates just why it's such an intense-feeling segment of the narrative. The Storyboard For Resident Evil's Maternity Ward Scene Helps Show What Makes The Sequence So Intense Image courtesy of Everett Collection The beginning of Resident Evil's ending sees lead character Bryan making his way through Raccoon City General Hospital following an outbreak that has warped almost every living person into nightmarish creatures with a thirst for blood. The tension and danger steadily amps up as Bryan makes his way to the top of the building, where scientists are awaiting his delivery of a stabilizer that's needed to develop a cure for the infection. Things reach their most tense when Bryan enters the Maternity Ward, and finds himself surrounded by troubling fleshy shapes that are revealed to all contain infected after Bryan accidentally awakens one troubling, baby-like looking creature. Illustrator and filmmaker Micah Brenner revealed the storyboards made for this sequence of the movie on X, with this behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this movie moment serving to lay out why it is so tense to watch on-screen. As seen in the storyboard, the long, slow pans throughout the room to establish the various dangers at hand set the scene well, before providing what is perhaps the movie's most horrifying reveal, as the similarly drawn-out rising up of the baby-looking monster - complete with a medical bracelet, to emphasize the prospect of this being a newborn to audiences - is horrifying in storyboard form alone, which is pretty impressive. Resident Evil's Maternity Ward Scene Perfectly Kicks Off The Movie's Ending Image credit: Sony Pictures Releasing / Courtesy Everett Collection Resident Evil's Maternity Ward scene arguably needed to pack the kind of punch that it does. Of course, this is crucial most obviously in the sense that this is the final leg of the journey of sorts before Bryan reaches his goal and delivers his package, meaning the drama and tension should ideally be at their highest here. But it's also worth keeping in mind the importance of this scene in terms of what it symbolizes, too. The Maternity Ward scene comes not long after Bryan's final phonecall to his partner, wherein he talks about how he wants to be a father and raise their child together, and how he only initially wasn't sure what to say to her because he was scared of the responsibility of becoming a parent. With this in mind, Resident Evil's Maternity Ward sequence is, in a way, the most important part of the film, as it represents Bryan's fears about parenthood and all it would entail, and shows him overcoming these fears in a sense just as he promised his girlfriend Michelle he would. That said, this does also make the final tragedies of the movie more somber, too, since the ending of the film means it's essentially impossible that Bryan ever got to be there as a father in the way he'd finally realized he wanted to be.
