The BBC's 23-Episode Fantasy Series Deserves Higher Than Its 83% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Sign in to your ScreenRant account Fantasy novels are notoriously difficult to adapt for the screen, but one series co-produced by the BBC and HBO does a much better job than its 83% Rotten Tomatoes score would have you believe. There will always be fantasy fans clamoring for adaptations of their favorite books, but if those movies or shows don't live up to their beloved source material, they're dead in the water. This is exactly what happened to 2007's The Golden Compass. Directed by Chris Weitz and starring Nicole Kidman, the film adapts Northern Lights, the first novel in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The Golden Compass instantly garnered controversy from religious organizations like the Catholic League, which called for a boycott of the film due to the belief that it promoted anti-religious messaging. At the same time, many fans of the book felt The Golden Compass actually watered down Pullman's religious criticisms, much to the movie's detriment. The result was a box office disappointment and a scrapped film trilogy. However, 12 years after The Golden Compass flopped, His Dark Materials came along, and the BBC/HBO TV series succeeded where the movie failed. His Dark Materials was not only able to adapt all three of Pullman's books over the course of three seasons, thus telling a complete, satisfying story, but readers were also incredibly pleased with it. However, critical reception was considerably cooler. His Dark Materials' Rotten Tomatoes Score Feels Harsh At 83%, His Dark Materials' Rotten Tomatoes score is hardly bad. However, the fact that it ranks lower than The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, and Game of Thrones seems a little off. Art is, of course, subjective, but in general, fantasy fans would agree that His Dark Materials is the most successful adaptation out of all these aforementioned series. The show arguably adapts its source material better than The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, and His Dark Materials nailed its ending, whereas Game of Thrones had possibly one of the worst series finales in fantasy TV history. Not every critic who reviewed His Dark Materials is guaranteed to have read Pullman's trilogy, or even be a fantasy fan at all. Compared to the big-budget spectacles of the other series, His Dark Materials is much quieter and subtler in terms of its fantastical elements, which was actually a knock against it as far as some pundits were concerned. However, despite His Dark Materials deserving more flowers, fans know how special it is, and that's all that matters. His Dark Materials Succeeds Where Many Fantasy Adaptations Fail Image via MovieStillsDB It can be tempting for filmmakers and storytellers to want to make their fantasy adaptations a big-screen event. However, the time constraints of a feature film mean that a lot of a fantasy novel's worldbuilding, nuance, and intricacies get lost. Viewers can often get exhausted as these movies tend to jump from one CGI-heavy action sequence to the next rather than giving their audience time to breathe and acclimate to the world they loved so much as readers. In contrast, as a television series, His Dark Materials had seven or eight episodes per season to tell its story, allowing time for louder fantasy scenes and moments of quiet depth. The nature of the medium also meant that His Dark Materials didn't have to race through or skip as much of Pullman's novels as The Golden Compass did, thus delivering a more faithful adaptation. Just look at Harry Potter. Though the film franchise was hugely successful, there isn't a single fan who doesn't bemoan the elimination of a favorite book storyline or character. However, with the upcoming Harry Potter HBO series, each novel will be adapted over the course of an entire season, just like His Dark Materials. It's a winning formula, and a perfect example of a fantasy adaptation done right.
