The topic of highly dense aircraft seating can be separated into narrowbody aircraft and widebody aircraft. The vast majority of low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers overwhelmingly use the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320 families. These aircraft are designed to seat six abreast, and there is essentially no variance in the industry (mainline and low-cost carriers alike) between how many economy class seats are abreast. With narrowbody aircraft, the economy density factor is essentially just a matter of seat pitch. The widebody Airbus A350 is where this can change, and low-cost carriers can squeeze passengers from side to side as well as front to back, with a tenth seat per row. In contrast a few airlines in Asia still configure their Boeing 777s with nine-abreast economy seats, while Japan Airlines is now alone in still having Boeing 787 Dreamliners configured eight-abreast in economy. Ryanair's Boeing 737 MAX 8-200s Credit: Ryanair As stated, Ryanair has no leeway in how many passengers it seats abreast in economy. The airline may have less space between the armrests, but this is due to wider armrests and possibly a slightly wider aisle. However, overall, there is the same amount of side-to-side space to share as mainline carriers like Delta and United, or whoever operates the 737 with an economy class. What Ryanair does is cut down the seat pitch to a minimum (around 28–29 inches) so that it can fit more rows of seats in. Ryanair also lacks premium seats that offer more room and would therefore take up more space. However, there is an issue. On the Boeing 737 MAX 8, it is possible to pack in more low-pitch seats than the aircraft is legally certified to carry because of exit limits. However, aircraft must be able to demonstrate that they can evacuate the aircraft in 90 seconds in an emergency. The workaround was Boeing developing the MAX 8-200 for Ryanair, which has since been selected by other low-cost airlines around the world. The main difference between the MAX 8-200 and the MAX 8 is the addition of more exits. This allows the aircraft to accommodate more passengers but still evacuate them in 90 seconds in an emergency. In theory, the aircraft can carry 210 people (including crew), and this is what Boeing advertises. In practice, EASA doesn't actually provide certification for that many, and Ryanair configures them with 197 seats plus six to eight crew members. Ten-Abreast Airbus A350-1000s Credit: Shutterstock The Airbus A350 was designed to comfortably seat nine passengers abreast in economy class, although it is capable of seating ten abreast. Incidentally, the wider Boeing 777 was also designed for comfortable nine-abreast seating, but these days, almost all 777s are seated ten-abreast in economy. The 777 can more easily do this as it is a wider aircraft compared with the A350. As such, Airbus developed a new production standard that allowed for an extra four inches in internal cabin width. This increased the cabin width from 15 feet and five inches (5.61 meters) to 18 feet and nine inches (5.71 meters). The extra inches make it easier for airlines to configure their aircraft ten abreast. However, there are only three airlines that configure their A350-1000s ten-abreast, and two of them are using the old production standard, meaning it is quite tight after all. Airlines are responding to competing demands and trends in the aviation industry. One demand is for the lowest possible fares, even at the expense of comfort. This has led to the explosion of low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers over the last couple of decades. The other trend has been for comfortable seating that avoids the expense of luxury. This has given rise to premium economy. French bee & Air Caraïbes Credit: Shutterstock The only two airlines to configure their old production standard A350-1000s abreast are French bee, a low-cost French leisure airline, and Air Caraïbes, a low-cost French West Indian leisure airline. Air Caraïbes is a sister airline to French bee under Groupe Dubreuil. These are also the only two airlines to configure the shorter (but same-width) Airbus A350-900s ten-abreast in economy class. These carriers fly transatlantic routes between Paris and the Caribbean or across the Pacific to Tahiti, as well as other long-haul leisure destinations. French bee configures its four A350-900s with a total of 411 seats, including 376 economy class seats and 35 premium economy seats. The maximum certified seating density of the -900 is 440 seats. These are pre-new production standard aircraft. French Bee's A350-1000s are configured with a total of 480 seats, of which 440 are economy class seats, and 40 are premium economy seats. Air Caraïbes's four A350-1000s are configured with 360 economy class seats, 45 premium economy, and 24 business class seats for a total of 429 seats. This means that French Bee's A350-1000s are the only examples to be actually configured with their maximum certified 480 seating configuration. Philippine Airlines: The Only High-Density Flag Carrier Credit: Philippine Airlines It is one thing for low-cost leisure carriers to configure their aircraft ultra-densely; it's another thing for flag carriers to do that. Philippine Airlines stands out for being the only flag carrier to configure its A350-1000s ten-abreast. The carrier also has a fleet of A350-900s, but these are configured with the standard nine-abreast. With that being said, one difference is that at least these A350-1000s are the new production standard, providing four extra inches in width. Philippine Airlines' A350-1000s were first delivered in late 2025 and are the first to use the new interior. Four inches may not sound much, and it's not, but seating in aircraft is very much a game of inches. Seat widths on French bee and Air Caraïbes are around 16–16.7 inches, but the extra room allows Philippine Airlines to provide seat widths of around 17 inches. The new production standard didn't just allow the A350 to have a slightly wider cabin, allowing ten-abreast seating to be a little more feasible: it also optimized the layout of the cabin. This allows the aircraft to fit more rows of seats, adding an extra 30 or so seats in typical configurations. One reason why more A350-900s aren't configured ten-abreast compared with the less-numerous A350-1000 is that it is shorter. The shorter length means it has a smaller capacity gain from switching to ten abreast. Cebu Pacific's A330s Credit: Airbus The search for the highest-density A330 in operation brings us back to the Philippines. Cebu Pacific is a Philippines-based airline and has the record for the most densely seated A330s ever put into operation. Its eight A330-900s from the A330neo series are configured with 459 seats in an all-economy layout. The A330 is narrower than the A350 and so can't feasibly seat ten-abreast, so these are configured nine-abreast. These Cebu Pacific A330neos are used on domestic routes and on international leisure routes where passengers prioritize low fares over comfort. Cebu's A330neos come close to the certified maximum of up to 465 seats. Impressively, this even exceeds many of the A380s in operation, which are typically lightly configured with emphasis on higher-class seating and comfort. Besides Cebu Pacific, other airlines with exceptionally dense A330s include Lion Air (up to 440 seats), some charter A330-300s with 400–430 seats, AirAsia's A330-300s with up to 367 seats, and others. For comparison, Delta Air Lines configures its A330-900s with 281 seats in three classes. Why The Boeing 777X Will Never Be As Dense Credit: Shutterstock The Boeing 777X is being built by Boeing to compete with the Airbus A350-1000. However, these aircraft are also very different. The Boeing 777X (specifically the 777-9) is to be the largest commercial aircraft on the market and is intended for a rather specialized role. The aircraft is specifically designed for long-haul, thick, trunk routes for mainline carriers. The A350-1000 is smaller and is more easily used on other routes, like leisure routes. Boeing is cutting down the exits on the Boeing 777-9, and this will inevitably reduce the number of passengers the aircraft will be certified to carry. The aircraft is stretched compared with the 777-300ER that it is replacing, and Boeing says this will enable it to carry an extra 34 passengers in a typical configuration. And yet, while the 777-300ER is certified for up to 550 passengers, it is estimated that max passenger certification for the 777-9 will be only around 475. This means that not only is the larger 777-9 going to have a significantly reduced max passenger load than the smaller 777-300ER, but it may be less than the much smaller A350-1000. Put another way, Airbus has designed the A350-1000 with the flexibility to be a high-density, long-haul airliner for low-cost carriers, while Boeing has designed the 777-9 as a premium airliner for mainline carriers on trunk routes. In this sense, the 777X is the opposite of Boeing's MAX 8-200 concept.
