The 8 Best Workout Shorts for Women of 2026, Tested By Editors and Stylists

ProsButtery-soft Made with a super lightweight fabric Squat-proofFeels super supportive I’ve tested a wide range of athletic shorts, but the Gym People High Waist Short topped my list for a few reasons: it’s super soft, has nice compression, comes in a ton of colors, and has many different pockets to store your belongings. Plus, said pockets don’t add any bulk to your legs—a rare find in a short. My biggest pet peeve with athletic shorts is when they feel way too tight and restrictive. But this pair, made from a polyester-spandex blend, has four-way stretch that makes it feel breathable, light, and easy to move in. “The fit is a bit more compressive around the stomach, which gives a nice smoothing and lifting effect—something I actually appreciate since super stretchy biker shorts can sometimes feel a little shapeless around the hips,” says style contributor Lily Wohlner. While this short does offer some compression, it leans more on the stretchy side than super form-fitting, so it might not be the best pick for high-impact workouts. It feels supportive, but I wouldn’t wear it for running or burpees since it doesn’t hold me in quite enough. That said, the fabric is buttery soft—like, ridiculously comfortable—so it’s perfect for walking, yoga, and Pilates. I also love that it’s not see-through, so I felt totally fine stretching and bending without worrying. The only downside? The moisture-wicking could be better. Wohlner says she wore it to hot yoga once, and the sweat stains were definitely noticeable.Read More: Best Leggings For Working Out Fabric 88% polyester, 12% spandexSizesXS—3XLRiseHighInseamN/AColors33Best For Low-impact activitiesProsGreat for running, walking, and HIIT workoutsAlthough it's shorter, it still offers great coverageDries quickly Doesn't ride upConsCan feel a bit revealing on those who like more coverageSo many WH editors love this short from lululemon, especially for running. "I hadn't bought a pair of running shorts in years, but given that I've taken up running as a hobby, I knew I needed some for moving in hot weather," says associate health & fitness editor Addison Aloian. This extremely lightweight short, made from polyester and elastane, stood out to her because it's light and airy and comes in a ton of colors. Plus, there's a little side pocket where you can store your keys while logging miles.Fast forward to today, she has logged hundreds of miles in this short and says it’s her all-time favorite pair for hitting the pavement. But, she also loves its versatility because she can wear it paired with a big sweatshirt for running errands, to a yoga class, or during her weekly strength training sessions. It never chafes or rubs against her legs, even when things start to get sweaty. Plus, she says the four-inch inseam offers excellent coverage so her cheeks are fully covered while she’s out and about. “They never ride up or move around, which is hard to find in a running short,” she says.Stylist Rose Lauture is also a mega fan of this short, but she actually prefers the shorter, 2.5-inch inseam option—it’s the shortest option on this list—for its super airy feel. Despite the shorter inseam, she never feels exposed, but opt for the longer pair if you want to feel more covered. However, both shorts have a built-in panty liner for added coverage, so you never have to worry about anything slipping out (IYKYK).Both testers commented on how quickly this short dries. After a run, Aloian says there were some sweaty spots, but they were completely dry by the time she was ready to shower.Fabric 86% recycled polyester, 14% elastaneSizes0—14RiseHighInseam2.5 in., 4 in.Colors9Best For Running, HIIT, walkingAdvertisement - Continue Reading BelowProsFlowy, flattering shape Great for cardio, strength training, and workout classes Breathable and lightweight ConsWe wish there were more core colorsWhen I reach for a flowy workout short, it’s usually Beyond Yoga’s. I’ve been wearing it a ton to heated Pilates classes (my latest hyperfixation) and the lightweight breathability is unmatched. It’s made from a lightweight, woven fabric comprised of polyester and elastane. Woven fabrics, as opposed to knit fabrics, tend to be super breathable—and the vented back panel and perforated material at the sides give this short an extra airy feel. I never overheat while wearing it, whether I’m sweating it out on the mat, or running miles.Speaking of, this short is the epitome of versatile—I love it for strength training when paired with the Spacedye Slim Tank (my #1 workout top!), but it’s also a great running short. Despite the non-stretch material, the waistband offers plenty of give (and is adjustable!) and the leg openings are wide enough to keep things comfortable without chafing or riding up at the inner thighs—IYKYK.It’s also really flattering, especially for a short that lacks compression. The body-skimming, flowy silhouette somehow makes my lower belly look super snatched. I love wearing it for regular days running errands paired with a matching tank or zip-up sweatshirt. My only small complaint is that I wish it were available in more core colors. Right now, you can get it year-round in two shades, but there are usually lots of fun seasonal options depending on when you’re browsing.Read More: Beyond Yoga Spacedye Slim Cropped Tank ReviewFabric88% recycled polyester, 12% elastaneSizesXXS—XXLRiseMidInseam2.5 inColors13 (2 core)Best ForHeated classes, running, lifting, lounging, walkingProsCute, retro-inspired designComfortable and flattering coverageLightweight and breathable for hot workoutsConsWe wish there were more color optionsHave you seen a cuter pair of workout shorts? I love the retro design with colorblocking and contrasting trims along with the mesh panels at the sides and hem. It’s one of the few workout shorts I wear just as frequently outside of the gym as I do to break a sweat. Pair it with a simple white tank (or top in any other color featured in the short) and flip-flops, and you have the perfect vintage activewear fit.I’m also a big fan of the length: The approximately 5-inch inseam and roomy leg openings with notched hems at the sides give a leg-slimming effect and are also just super comfortable. It also makes sure I don’t accidentally show too much skin while running in my neighborhood or picking up weights at the gym. An added layer of protection there is the built-in brief, which, unlike many I’ve encountered, doesn’t feel like it's giving me a constant wedgie (I’ve literally cut them out of my shorts before, but I barely notice it in this short).Another bonus? The mesh paneling I mentioned earlier is as stylish as it is breathable. Even when I throw it on for a run on a hot August afternoon, things stay feeling light and airy.I only wish this short came in more colors—I would genuinely purchase them all. Right now, you can snag it in two color combos, but I’d love to see a few more and maybe even a neutral option.Fabric100% polyesterSizesXS—XLRiseMidInseam4.75 in (size small)Colors2Best ForRunning, lifting, walking, loungeAdvertisement - Continue Reading BelowProsOne of the longest pairs of shorts on this listSuper soft, but still makes you feel tucked in and secureWide range of sizesUV-protective fabric ConsWe wish there were more colorsIf you're looking for a buttery-soft workout fit, this biker short from Beyond Yoga is your best friend. The brand itself is a favorite among our fashion team, and that's because the fabrics, which are made from super soft polyester and elastane, are never tight and constricting, always smooth and soft (yet still contouring and flattering!).Yes, the short is awesome for all sorts of workouts, but we also love it for running errands and, dare we say it, lounging, as it looks so cute with every outfit and feels so comfortable for all-day wear. Plus, it's moisture-wicking during sweaty workouts or super hot days. Speaking of sunny days, the short also has built-in UV protection, because we're all about staying protected from the sun here. The Spacedye Biker Short is also one of the longest options on this list, so it's a solid choice if you're looking for something with a bit more leg coverage.I often wear this short to yoga, but it's compressive enough that it doesn't budge when I wear it for a run or to higher intensity classes. According to stylist Kristen Saladino, the high-waisted fit makes you feel super tucked-in and secure without feeling constricted. And, if you need a larger size, this short goes all the way up to a 4XL.I do wish there were more colors to choose from. As of now, the brand only offers two core colors in this short.Fabric 87% polyester, 13% elastaneSizesXXS—4XLRiseHighInseam3 in., 5 in., 7 in.Colors5Best For Yoga, Pilates, lounging, walkingProsSuper lightweightMoisture-wickingOdor controlGreat for runnersConsWe wish there were more tummy controlSure, we love the lululemon short for running, but the Norvan Short from Arc'teryx is built for the trails—and that’s exactly what we use it for. Lauture gives this fitted short a big thumbs-up for feeling super light and breathable, especially on long runs. It’s made from 100% polyester, so it’s airy and helps keep you cool by letting moisture escape and regulating your body temp. And if things do get sweaty, the built-in moisture-wicking brief (with anti-microbial treatment) helps manage odor—so you don’t have to stress.Got loose keys or headphones? There's a discreet zippered back pocket that fits the essentials, like gels, electrolyte packs—you name it. It also has a reflective logo to help with visibility if you're running after dark. Another plus: the split side hem gives you a full range of motion, which is great for picking up the pace. Our only real gripe is that we wish the waistband were a bit thicker for more tummy support. It’s also low-rise, which might not be everyone’s thing—but Lauture said she was surprised by how comfortable it felt and that it stayed put during her runs.Fabric 100% recycled polyesterSizes00—16RiseMid-riseInseam3 in.Best For Running, hiking, walkingColors3Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowProsBuilt-in brief for added protection Has a compression waistband Never clingy In my experience, it's difficult to find flowy workout shorts that don't show too much skin, but this option from Alo shifts that paradigm. It's light and airy with its woven material, but it doesn't have any open seams, so you don't have to worry about the wind catching it in the wrong way (IYKYK). Plus, it has a built-in brief, which is awesome for added protection.I also love the thick elastic waistband, which not only adds a fun design element, but hits at the perfect height on our stomach to offer a nice contouring effect. There's also an invisible side pocket to store all your small essentials while on the go.My favorite part about this short is that it's never clingy, so it doesn't ride up the thigh or need constant re-adjusting while you're working out. I’ve owned it for months and recently tested it during a 45-minute strength and HIIT workout as well as an hour-long cross-training workout, and I never felt over-exposed or uncomfortable in it. It's roomy, but also holds you in. Plus, the fabric dries super fast, so you're in good hands if you get super sweaty. It does run one size big, which you should note when adding to cart. However, if you like shorts that are roomier, I can confirm that this one still gets high marks even when it's a size too big. In my experience, it still felt full-coverage, airy, and lightweight.Fabric 90% polyester, 10% elastaneSizesXXS—LRiseHighInseam2.5 in.Colors12Best For All workoutsProsSuper soft, but still makes you feel tucked in and secureWide range of sizesUV-protective fabricConsThey can be a little loud while walkingPatagonia’s Baggies Short is a warm-weather favorite among our editors—especially the ones who love spending time outdoors, like myself. I recently took this short on a trip with me to hike Utah’s Mighty 5, and it was perfect for a hot, sunny day hiking in Arches National Park. It’s easy to throw on, thanks to its comfy fit that completely avoids any unwanted cling (no camel toe here, thank you very much). Plus, it’s made from quick-drying, breathable nylon, so I never have to worry about feeling weighed down. I’m personally stoked to wear this short again while hiking in Cotopaxi National Park in Ecuador. While it definitely has a sporty vibe, it’s versatile enough to wear around the city, too. In black, it feels laid-back and low-key—perfect for running errands without looking like you just left the gym. Toss on an oversized sweatshirt or a longline sports bra, and you’ve got an effortless, off-duty look. And if you get caught in the rain or decide to take a dip? No stress—it’s water-repellent, so it won’t stay soaked. The 5-inch inseam is another win: not too long, not too short—just the right amount of leg without worrying about coverage. Prefer something shorter? The Baggie also comes in a 2.5-inch version, which is great if you want a more cropped fit.Read More: Best Hiking ClothesFabric 100% nylonSizesXXS—4XLRiseHighInseamPetite: 2.5 in., regular: 4 in.Colors12 (petite); 8 regular)Best For Hiking, lounging, walkingShannen Zitz is the Associate Style & Reviews Editor at Women's Health, where she covers all-things sneakers and activewear.
