Obsession captivated audiences with its enticing premise Be careful what you wish for Written and directed by Curry Barker, Obsession revolves around Baron "Bear" Bailey (Michael Johnston), a mild-mannered music store employee who has a crush on his co-worker, Nikki Freeman (Inde Navarrette). Bear finally decides to tell Nikki how he really feels and buys her a "One Wish Willow," a toy that claims to grant one wish after you break it. After failing to confess his love, an angry Bear breaks the One Wish Willow, wishing for Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world. Much to his surprise, the wish comes true, and Nikki becomes infatuated with Bear. What Bear comes to realize is that the wish has deadly consequences, and Nikki's love for him becomes dangerous. Obsession also stars Megan Lawless and Cooper Tomlinson as Sarah and Ian, Nikki and Bear's friends and co-workers. Navarrette has emerged as the breakout star, as Nikki might go down as one of horror's best characters of the decade. Barker is now seen as one of horror's next great directors. The young filmmaker has already signed on to write and direct an A24 reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Barker's next movie, Anything but Ghosts, will likely come out in 2027. Tracking projected the small indie to make $8 to $10 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada. For a movie with a $750,000 budget, that would be a fantastic number. Obsession almost doubled the projection by posting an opening weekend of $17.2 million. Obsession's ascent to box office glory is mind-blowing. Obsession's second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth weekends outgrossed the opening weekend. Personally, I went to a Tuesday night showing three weeks after opening weekend, and the theater was packed. Per Box Office Mojo, Obsession has a worldwide gross of $429 million. Obsession surpassed Sinners for the highest-grossing English-language original live-action film of the 2020s.
