Quentin Tarantino abandoned The Movie Critic in 2024 after preparing it as his tenth and final film. Set in California in 1977, the project was inspired by a reviewer who wrote for an adult magazine, with Brad Pitt attached to star. It appeared close to production before Tarantino changed his mind. What remains is another film that can be pieced together from interviews but never watched, despite having progressed further than many ideas he has discussed over the years. He now has another screenplay he likes, though he is not ready to shoot it. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Tarantino said he wanted to stage his play, spend time with his family, and then decide what to do next, according to Variety. That leaves Tarantino's final directing slot open, but it hardly guarantees a return to an earlier project. Some abandoned films reached completed scripts with other writers. Others never advanced beyond a premise he enjoyed describing. Tarantino makes a glass of milk frightening when Hans Landa drinks it in a farmer’s kitchen in Inglourious Basterds. In Jackie Brown, he returns to a money exchange three times before revealing how Jackie fooled everyone involved. Those scenes are the reason a few casting details or a proposed storyline can make an abandoned film so frustrating. 3 Double V Vega Vincent Vega returns from Amsterdam with stories about hash bars and McDonald’s in Pulp Fiction. Double V Vega would have shown him there, running a club for Marsellus Wallace when his brother Vic came to visit. Vic is Michael Madsen’s Mr. Blonde from Reservoir Dogs, giving Madsen and John Travolta a chance to play brothers who never meet onscreen. Having Vic hang around the club would have given Vincent someone pretty difficult to manage. He can barely tolerate Jules disagreeing with him, and Vic enjoys provoking men who are already angry. Being his brother might have made Vincent’s attempts to give orders even funnier. Unfortunately, Tarantino never developed a full story around the visit. The prequel also became harder to make as its stars aged. By 2007, he acknowledged that Travolta and Madsen were too old for the Amsterdam film he had imagined, leaving their family resemblance confined to a surname (via SlashFilm). 2 Star Trek Image via MovieStillsDB Tarantino pitched Star Trek to producer J.J. Abrams, and Mark L. Smith wrote a screenplay from the idea. Smith later discussed its gangster scenes, while reports connected the premise to “A Piece of the Action,” in which Kirk and Spock encounter a planet modeled on Chicago’s mob culture. Kirk trying to talk his way past mobsters would have suited Tarantino’s patience for a bluff quite well. Kirk could have bargained with armed criminals using their own language, trying to make peace sound profitable. Spock’s objections would have complicated the performance, especially whenever Kirk’s bluff started to potentially sound like an actual business arrangement. Smith completed the screenplay, but told Collider that Tarantino began questioning whether he wanted Star Trek to be his final film. Smith’s script remained unfilmed, leaving Tarantino’s version of Kirk and Spock on the page. 1 Kill Bill: Vol.3 Beatrix gets to leave Vernita’s kitchen and eventually go home with B.B. Nikki has to stay in the house where her mother was killed. Beatrix tells Nikki she will understand if she comes looking for revenge. Years of raising B.B. could have made that promise harder to keep. She would have to explain to her daughter why the woman hunting her had a reason to do it. Tarantino discussed returning to Beatrix and B.B. decades later, with Maya Hawke as a possible grown-up B.B., not a confirmed cast member. Though, he dismissed a third film in 2023 (via ComingSoonReports). It never entered production, leaving Quentin Tarantino’s revenge story with a child who had been told she could come looking for its heroine.
