Maybe it’s because I know I’m about to spend a lot more time indoors, but as soon as the temperature drops, I suddenly start noticing the overflowing wardrobe, chaotic kitchen cupboards and cleaning products precariously balanced under the stairs. While I’d love to say I have a perfectly organised home all year round, I absolutely do not. Instead, I tend to use the changing seasons as an excuse to tackle all those jobs I’ve been putting off for months. From finally sorting my wardrobe and swapping over my bedding to making my living room feel a little cosier, these are the clever buys I’m using to give my home an autumn reset – plus a few things I’m planning to invest in, too.1. Start with the wardrobeThe twice-yearly event I dread every time: the wardrobe switch-over. It always gets worse before it gets better, with my bed covered in clothes and divided into three piles: keep for next season, sell on Vinted and donate.Once I’ve sorted through everything, I store the clothes I don’t need in under-bed storage bags. I’m running out of space, though, which makes me think I might need to invest in some of these vacuum storage bags. Anything that can make my wardrobe take up less room is a winner in my book.2. Give your shoe storage a makeoverI do the same with my shoes. Pairs I won’t be wearing go under the bed, while my autumn and winter shoes make their way onto the shoe rack. The only problem? I’ve run out of space – a hazard of the job, as writing about fashion often leads to purchases. My mum bought these clever shoe organisers and I think I might have to invest in some, too. They stack your shoes on top of each other, so you can essentially double the number of pairs you can fit into the same space. And with autumn comes the return of boots, so I’ve also been thinking about how best to keep them in shape. I’ve found that inserting shoe trees is one of the easiest ways to help them retain their shape. They’re perhaps not the most exciting thing to spend your money on, but they’re worth it in the long run if they help your favourite shoes last for longer.3. Create an entranceway drop zoneThis is the area of my flat that is in desperate need of being autumn-proofed. With rain, umbrellas and increasingly muddy shoes making their return, having a dedicated drop zone by the door suddenly feels very appealing. An umbrella basket – especially if it’s a rattan one – isn’t just practical, but can look pretty, too. I also love the idea of a storage bench.4. Reset your kitchen cupboardsI’m still in the process of weeding out all the plastic containers in my kitchen cupboards (I’m nearly there!) and these ribbed glass containers are next on my to-buy list. There’s something about decanting everything into matching containers that makes even the most chaotic cupboard feel instantly more organised.I’m also a big fan of maximising the space in my kitchen cupboards, as I’ve got very few drawers. These clever under-shelf drawers from Joseph Joseph make use of all that otherwise wasted space underneath your shelves.5. Sort out your linen cupboardAutumn is also my reminder that it’s probably time to store away the summer duvet. Those vacuum storage bags do a brilliant job of making bulky bedding as small as possible, which is particularly useful if, like me, you’re constantly fighting for cupboard space. The same goes for summer bedding. These organisers are so handy for keeping bed linen neatly stored, and you’ll never have to search for the matching pillowcases again, as you can put the entire set in one organiser. Alternatively, if you’re struggling to keep bedding sets separated in your wardrobe, you could use shelf dividers. They’re also brilliant for organising jumpers.6. Give your bed an autumn refreshOnce I’ve organised the linen cupboard, I think I’ve earned the fun part: treating myself to some new bedding.I’ve got my eye on these great sets from the aptly named The Set, which include two duvet covers, four pillowcases and two fitted sheets, so you get everything you need for a complete bedding refresh. This set from Piglet, meanwhile, combines delicate wildflowers with oversized heritage checks and feels perfect for autumn. There’s nothing quite like getting into fresh bedding when the evenings start getting colder.7. Finally tackle the cleaning cupboardIf, like mine, your cleaning cupboard is essentially just an empty space – in my case, under the stairs – chances are it’s not exactly decked out with built-in storage.Stackable storage bins have become essential for storing away cleaning products, spare vacuum cleaner attachments and all those other bits and pieces that otherwise end up scattered around the cupboard. We use the top one as a recycling bin, too.Another easy fix for preventing brooms, mops and other cleaning tools from falling over is to fix them to the wall with adhesive grippers. No drilling required, which is always a bonus.8. Reset your living roomCome autumn, I know I’ll be spending a lot more time indoors – with or without a blanket – which means I need to get better at keeping my living room tidy.Folding away blankets at night, or popping them into a storage basket, is a quick way to make the room feel instantly neater. I’m also a big fan of having a statement tray on the coffee table. It gives remotes, lighters and other little bits and pieces a designated home, while also making a design statement in its own right.9. Add some cosy new layersSpeaking of soft furnishings, there’s no time like the start of a new season to invest in some new cushions and throws. They can instantly give your living space a completely different look without having to make any major changes. It’s also one of my favourite ways to breathe new life into a living room without committing to something like a new sofa, which would be a considerably more expensive undertaking. A new cushion here, a cosy throw there, and suddenly the room feels much more autumnal.10. Change up your lightingThe right lighting can make such a big difference, especially as the nights draw in. As we head into autumn, I’m always tempted to switch on the lamps earlier in the evening and create a softer, cosier atmosphere rather than relying on the main overhead light.A statement table lamp can make an otherwise forgotten corner feel more considered, while a floor lamp is an easy way to add another layer of lighting to a room.11. Give your bathroom a little luxuryI’m one of those people who lives in a bathrobe come autumn, so there’s no better time to invest in a new one. Obviously, I don’t do this every season, but I’ve been eyeing this striped one from TBCo since last winter and I think I might finally pull the trigger. While you’re at it, it’s also worth checking in on your towels. If, like me, you live in London, the harsh water and lack of a tumble dryer mean mine don’t stay as soft and fluffy as I’d like. I probably have to replace my towels a little more often than the average person, and my latest top-up is this selection from Next.
