In some instances, you may just get free or cheaper electricity, so you will get money off your bill. It is not known exactly how much money households can earn through the scheme. But, you should not expect more than a few quid each time, according to MoneySavingExpert. When these events are running you may be expected to use less electricity during so-called peak hours. To get rewarded during these events, you will need to slash your energy usage. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the most effective way to do this is by delaying when you use big appliances like your washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher, as these tend to use the most energy. You can also switch to appliances that use less energy in these times, such as your microwave instead of your oven. Even if you supplier is not on the list you may still be able to lower the cost of your bill. E.ON Next customers signed up to a time-of-use tariff can save cash by running their electrical devices during off-peak times. Its Next Smart Saver tariff offers cheaper electricity during off-peak (5am-4pm, 7pm-2am) and super off-peak (2am-5am) hours.
