Thailand to send monsoon gift to India: Rain likely in these places soon

India could soon see another low-pressure system develop over the Bay of Bengal, after a weather system currently over Thailand begins moving towards the Indian coast.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said an upper-air circulation over north Thailand is expected to emerge over the north Andaman Sea around the evening of September 18.Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around the evening of September 19. (Photo: PTI) The system is then expected to gradually intensify and move west-northwestwards towards the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts over the following three to four days. In other words, more rain is coming.WHERE WILL IT RAIN?The developing system could add to rainfall over parts of eastern and central India as it moves inland. (Photo: PTI) On September 17, heavy rain is expected at isolated places in Odisha's neighbouring eastern regions, including Bihar, while Odisha itself is forecast to receive fairly widespread rain from September 19 to 22.Andhra Pradesh is also expected to see a change as the system approaches.The IMD has forecast heavy rain at isolated places over Andhra Pradesh on September 19 and 20, with rainfall activity continuing into the following days.Telangana could also see heavy rain from September 19 to 22. (Photo: IMD) This means the new system could help sustain or increase rainfall over parts of eastern and central India, particularly around Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.But its exact strength and track will become clearer only after the low-pressure area actually forms.WILL MONSOON RECOVER?The timing of this particular low pressure system could prove pivotal for India's rainy season. The southwest monsoon is already entering its withdrawal phase in northwest India, and is doing so with a deficient season since its beginning in June.The IMD said conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon to begin withdrawing from some parts of West Rajasthan around September 19. Withdrawal happens gradually as rainfall decreases and atmospheric moisture and wind patterns change.India's monsoon has also remained uneven this year.As of September 16, the country was facing an overall rainfall deficit of about 15%, according to official rainfall data.The incoming system, therefore, could bring another spell of rain even as the monsoon begins its retreat from the northwest.But it is not expected to reverse the seasonal withdrawal; instead, it will become another important rain-producing system to watch as the monsoon enters its final phase.- EndsPublished On: Sep 17, 2026 15:33 IST
