A Thai woman has accused a Kanpur trader of taking around Rs 60 lakh after marrying her in Thailand, alleging he concealed his existing marriage and later pressured her to convert to Islam in order to get her money back. Police have registered an FIR and arrested Irfan.The woman said that Irfan told her she would have to come to India, live with him and convert to Islam if she wanted her money back. Kanpur,Oct 7, 2026 10:56 ISTA relationship that began on social media and led to a marriage in Thailand has now turned into a police case in Kanpur, after a Thai woman accused leather trader from Uttar Pradesh of cheating her of around Rs 60 lakh and pressuring her to convert to Islam.Police have arrested Kanpur-based trader Mohammad Irfan after the woman alleged that he claimed to be unmarried when they tied the knot in Thailand two years ago and later took money from her for business needs.According to the woman, she first came in contact with Irfan around four years ago through social media. Irfan travelled frequently to Thailand for business and the two grew closer during his visits. She claims they eventually married in Thailand as per local customs.Even after their marriage, Irfan continued travelling to Thailand, the woman said in her complaint. During this period, she said, she gave him money on several occasions for different business requirements, with the total amount eventually reaching around Rs 60 lakh. The situation changed when she began asking for the money back.The woman said that Irfan told her she would have to come to India, live with him and convert to Islam if she wanted her money back. She also claimed that she was asked to wear a burqa. She refused the conditions, following which Irfan returned to India in February 2026 and gradually stopped responding to her calls, according to her complaint.After repeated attempts to contact him failed, she travelled to Kanpur herself.On October 6, the woman reached Irfan’s house on Latouche Road with an acquaintance. She claimed that she learnt there for the first time that Irfan was already married and had three children.The woman then approached the police and submitted photographs, marriage-related documents and other papers in support of her complaint.She also told police that she runs a canteen and restaurant business in Thailand and that the money she gave Irfan came from her own earnings as well as loans taken from relatives.The woman also alleged that she was assaulted when she reached Irfan’s house and that pressure was put on her to convert her religion.Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered at Kanpur’s Anwar Ganj police station and Irfan was arrested. Police are now examining the marriage documents, the financial transactions between the two and the other allegations made by the woman.DCP Central Atul Shrivastava said the accused had been arrested and further legal action was being taken. Police are also verifying the other facts mentioned in the complaint.- Ends
