Pickup basketball is a great way to stay active, fit, and enjoy a little friendly competition. At least it’s mostly friendly. Pickup games can get a little heated and often feature some, let’s call it, “spirited disagreement” about how rules are enforced. After all, with no refs, it’s up to the players to self-police the game. But the Wild West nature of friendly pickup games recently gave one social media creator a brilliant idea. Creator dons ref uniform and whistle, then hits the court Christian Ortiz is a social specialist and a sports creator with over a million combined followers across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. He’s best known for his NBA commentary, where he does weekly recaps and breaks down league news. In other words, Ortiz knows ball, which makes his latest stunt make absolute, perfect sense. In a series of recent videos, Ortiz has thrown on an NBA referee shirt, grabbed his trusty whistle, and hit the courts… of random pickup basketball games at local parks and gyms. In a recent video, he runs onto the court during a pickup game at LA Fitness and immediately begins fairly and accurately refereeing. He whistles to stop play, calls fouls, tracks possession, and warns players for their behavior. It’s absolutely brilliant. Players are dumbfounded at first, and then… The reactions when Ortiz starts reffing the game are great. At first, the players are confused, then mildly annoyed as they try to brush him off and continue playing. “Get off the court!” one of the LA Fitness guys shouts at him. But it doesn’t take too long before they actually start playing by his rules. After calling a foul on a layup drive, one of the players shows Ortiz his respect: “Aye, good call.” In one video, Ortiz pulls up his own camera footage for an on-the-spot review of a foul. It was indisputable evidence that the players had to acknowledge. After a heated disagreement between players, Ortiz approaches one of them and says, “Hey, can we watch the language?” The man responds, “My bad, ref.” Another, about halfway through the video, shares some kind words: “We appreciate what you’re doing.” For the most part, all the players collectively agreed to respect the calls. Whether they were ultimately annoyed or amused by Ortiz’s presence, there were plenty of smiles and laughs as everyone on the court became part of the bit. Millions have viewed the videos and can’t get enough: “They keep saying, ‘whyy’all listening to him?’ Yet they’re stopping after every call,” one commenter pointed out. “Lmao they started obeying him,” said another. “NBA should hire this guy,” another declared. Referee stunt is a prank gone right Public social media pranks and stunts have been on the rise for years now. Far too often, they mine humor at the expense of unsuspecting bystanders, often blue-collar workers at grocery stores or restaurants who are just trying to earn a living. One recent prank in which “content creators” pretend to digitally steal money from a Red Baron employee stocking shelves made news when the fed-up victim took out his frustrations on the pranksters. “It’s not a joke to me, OK? I don’t have time for this crap in my life,” the man said. “You’re probably making money off of this. And I can’t even pay my … mortgage. And I’ve got four kids at home.” In response, someone set up a GoFundMe for the man that has raised $250,000. It’s a signal that people are tired of humiliation and mean-spirited pranks being passed off as content. Ortiz shows that harmless set-ups that spread smiles and joy can be just as good—no, better. Tens of millions of views from making people laugh and inviting them into the joke instead of making them the butt of it? That’s a slam dunk.
