Tesla Semi electric truck to hit Europe's roads next year with 342-mile range

Tesla has revealed specification details for its new Semi electric HGV, which will offer up to 342 miles of range.Elon Musk's EV brand is finally bringing its electric truck, designed for long-haul haulage, to Europe almost a decade after it was first unveiled. The Texas-based manufacturer says the Semi is 'more powerful and more efficient than traditional trucks while costing less' to operate. The European version of the Tesla Semi will support Tesla's Megacharging technology, which can deliver charging speeds of up to 1,200kW, adding around 60 per cent charge in just 30 minutes to get drivers back on the road quickly.Tesla is also promising 'badass performance' thanks to multiple independent motors delivering instant torque and smooth power delivery. The Semi will arrive in Europe in 2027, a decade after Tesla first pulled the covers off the prototype. Underpinned by a 1,000V architecture compatible with the Megachargers (up to 800kW speeds) the Semi will add around 205 miles of range in 30 minutesTesla Semi range and Megacharging capabilitiesThe claimed 342-mile range will be replenished using Tesla's Megacharger network, the company's answer to BYD's Flash Charging system in China.Underpinned by a 1,000V architecture compatible with Megachargers, which can provide charging speeds of up to 800kW, the Semi can add around 205 miles of range after just 30 minutes plugged in.This will help keep the circa 9,100kg truck on the road, with Tesla estimating energy consumption of around 0.62 miles per kWh.However, Tesla has yet to roll out a dedicated Megacharger network for the Semi in Europe, with further details about the infrastructure still to be announced.Join the discussionWill electric trucks like Tesla's Semi truly revolutionize freight transport or are they just hype? What's your view?'Badass performance'Three independent electric motors drive the Semi's rear axles, with Tesla quoting a combined output of 1,037bhp.Its quoted 9,100kg kerb weight excludes any payload, with gross combination weight reaching approximately 40 tonnes.Tesla says the Semi delivers strong performance at any speed and predictable power delivery, without the noise, vibration and mechanical complexity associated with a conventional diesel powertrain. The truck also features an electric power take-off system capable of delivering up to 25kW, allowing operators to power equipment fitted to, or used alongside, the vehicle.Lower costs of ownershipTesla is placing heavy emphasis on the Semi's ability to improve the economics of trucking. As such, the company claims the EV can reduce energy costs per mile compared with diesel-powered alternatives in many operating scenarios, thanks to lower electricity costs. The manufacturer also points to reduced maintenance requirements due to fewer moving parts, the absence of diesel after-treatment systems, increased vehicle uptime and a simpler overall servicing experience.Like Tesla's passenger EVs, the Semi benefits from remote diagnostics and over-the-air software updates, allowing the vehicle to be continuously improved throughout its life. The Semi is currently being exhibited at IAA Transportation in Hannover, and will continue to be on show until 20 September. Customer deliveries are scheduled to launch in Europe next yearHow much will the Semi cost and when is it arriving? The Semi, which has been developed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, is among the small proportion of trucks currently sold with battery-electric power.Tesla has yet to confirm European pricing, with final specifications and figures still subject to homologation and market configuration. While the Semi is available in North America in both Standard Range and Long Range forms, current indications suggest the UK will receive only the Standard Range model. The Semi is currently being exhibited at IAA Transportation in Hannover and will remain on display until 20 September.Visitors can view the European-specification truck on Tesla's stand, with ride-alongs available during the show, subject to availability.Fleet operators interested in the Semi can register for updates ahead of the model's European launch. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin next year, with further details expected in the coming months.
