Terror in West Bank grows as senior IDF official warns of 'tense days and weeks' ahead

ByAMIR BOHBOTJULY 26, 2026 12:32IDF intelligence officials and commanders on the ground have warned in their operational assessments of "a very tense situation" for some time, a senior officer in the IDF Central Command stated on Sunday.Despite the extensive dismantling of terrorist infrastructure by the IDF Central Command, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), and the Border Police, the officer said the threat posed by lone attackers and locally organized terror cells seeking to exploit opportunities to attack Israeli civilians or IDF soldiers continues to loom.Only hours before the deadly attack, the Judea and Samaria Division, under the command of Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, had concluded a counterterrorism operation focused on Jenin and Nablus.At the same time, the senior officer said that since the launch of Operation Rising Lion, "we have seen an increase, for a variety of reasons, in the scale of terrorism developing in the West Bank, including semi-military terror cells and lone attackers."According to the officer, the trend has also been fueled by "additional factors that have steadily intensified through Iranian direction from Gaza and Turkey, including the smuggling of weapons and terror funds, some of them transferred digitally."Israeli security forces at the scene of a stabbing attack near the Israeli settlement of Alon Moreh, in the West Bank, July 23, 2026 (credit: HILEL BEN OR/FLASH90)Alongside the IDF's and Shin Bet's extensive efforts against terrorist infrastructure, security forces are also working continuously to prevent the transfer of terror funds into the West Bank and to secure the seam line in order to thwart and disrupt terrorists attempting to infiltrate deeper into Israeli territory.Number of outposts, troop deployment in West Bank increasesThe senior officer confirmed that prior to the attack, the IDF Chief of Staff decided to reduce troop deployments in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip and transfer an additional brigade to the West Bank. Following the attack, additional combat battalions are expected to arrive.The officer also noted that 19 new communities have been established in recent years, creating additional security demands as the number of unauthorized outposts continues to grow. At this stage, not including new outposts established overnight, there are now 80 new outposts.In addition, there are currently 126 farms across Judea and Samaria, excluding the Jordan Valley, which the officer described as posing a significant challenge in defending against terrorist attacks."Violent outposts are one of the issues challenging our ability to maintain control of the area and uphold law and order," the senior officer said, highlighting the Samaria and Binyamin regions.
