Fourteen people were rushed to hospital following the incident, with 11 treated at the Burns Unit at the General University Hospital of Alicante. A further 13 people were treated at the Altea Health Centre. One shaken witness said: “What was supposed to be a night of partying ended in moments of real panic. Most read in The Sun “The fireworks went straight towards the area where we were on the beach and people started running. “Ambulances and emergency services went to the scene. There is talk of numerous wounded.” The incident was confirmed by the organisers, the Brotherhood of Castell de l’Olla. They said emergency services – including paramedics – responded quickly to treat and evacuate those affected. The Castell de l’Olla is a prestigious annual pyrotechnic festival held in Altea, Alicante. The spectacular display is unique because the fireworks are launched entirely from the sea, using floating platforms and barges. It comes after crowds were battered by rogue fireworks when a family-friendly display turned into chaos earlier this year. Onlookers had gathered to watch a fireworks display in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, when pyrotechnics suddenly began showering the crowd with sparks. Spectators closest to the explosions recoiled in shock, with some throwing their hands over their faces to protect themselves. Others were seen scrambling away in panic as deafening bangs rang out and blinding flashes lit up the scene. Witnesses later described the terrifying scenes as feeling like an “air raid”. No official injuries were reported following the shocking incident, but several people claimed they had suffered minor burns. Comment now
