Ten Chart Records Ella Langley Has Broken or Set

The country singer’s hit song, “Choosin’ Texas,” is on the precipice of setting an illustrious record for the most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for a non-holiday title by a woman with no male-billed acts. And she would be surpassing two of the most legendary woman artists in music if she accomplishes the historic feat. This week, on the chart dated July 25, “Choosin’ Texas,” which first topped the Hot 100 in February, ties Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” for the most weeks at No. 1 among non-holiday titles by women with no male-billed acts. It won’t be revealed until Monday if Langley achieves the huge milestone and surpasses Carey and Houston, but, in the meantime, the Alabama native has been setting records almost every week on both the pop and country charts with either “Choosin’ Texas” or her album, Dandelion. Langley wrote the two-stepping, mid-tempo song about a heartbreak with Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor. As Langley told Billboard earlier this year, “I was on a writers retreat with Miranda, our first time writing together. At a young age, she had a pet kangaroo. She told me how she got pulled over once with the kangaroo in the passenger seat. The kangaroo got her out of a ticket and she said, ‘Of course, I had Texas plates, too.’ I went, ‘Well, she’s from Texas, I can tell…’ Forty-five minutes later, we had the song written.” Below is a list of records “Choosin’ Texas” and Langley have already matched or set. Taking on the Titans As noted above, the single, which first led the Hot 100 in February, is tied with Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” for the most weeks at No. 1 among non-holiday titles by women with no male-billed acts. (The overall record is 22 weeks by Mariah Carey with “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”). Double Trouble Langley and Megan Moroney pulled off a new feat in March, when she and Megan Moroney became the first women primarily known as country artists to concurrently top the Hot 100 (with Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas”) and the Billboard 200 (with Moroney’s Cloud 9). “Choosin’ Texas” Lights Up Langley’s Life Even if she remains tied with Carey and Houston, “Choosin’ Texas” already has a number of records to itself on the Hot 100. One of the bigger ones: When “Choosin’ Texas” notched its 11th week atop the Hot 100 at the end of June, it became the sole longest-leading country title (defined as those that have appeared on Hot Country Songs) by a woman, surpassing Debby Boone’s 1977 smash “You Light Up My Life.” Swiftly Besting Taylor’s Record Langley topped Taylor Swift’s record for the most weeks by a woman on the Country Songwriters chart for the chart dated July 4 when she logged 17 weeks (and has now logged 20 weeks) The only other women to top Country Songwriters are Tracy Chapman (14 weeks), Laura Veltz (five), Beyonce (two), Megan Moroney (one), Nicolle Galyon (one) and Gabby Barrett (one). She has a way to go to catch up with the leader, Zach Bryan, who has 97 total weeks at No. 1. Parton Me “Choosin’ Texas” is also breaking records for Langley as one of the song’s writers. For the Hot 100 chart dated July 25, she equals the run of another song with a famed country pedigree: Dolly Parton wrote fellow 14-week Hot 100 No. 1 “I Will Always Love You,” which Whitney Houston covered for The Bodyguard. So, Langley is tied with Parton (and Miranda Lambert) for a country artist/songwriter with the longest chart topper on the Hot 100. Women Rule Langley shared a very noteworthy record on Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated July 25, where women held the entire top 5 for an unprecedented sixth consecutive week. Langley occupied three of the five slots: No. 1 (“Choosin’ Texas”), No. 3 (“Be Her”) and No. 5 (“I Can’t Love You Anymore” with Morgan Wallen), while Taylor Swift ranked No. 2 (“I Knew It, I Knew You”) and Stella Lefty in No. 4 (“Boston”) Moving Lots and Lots of Music Dandelion earned more than 100,000 equivalent album units in four different weeks since its initial debut — the first time a country album by a woman has achieved that feat since the Billboard 200 began measuring by units in December 2014. Producing Results Langley also holds the record for the most weeks spent at No. 1 on the Country Producers chart among women, with seven weeks. The only other women to top Country Producers are Taylor Swift (4 weeks), Beyonce (2) and Miranda Lambert (1). Hat Trick In February, Langley became the only woman to simultaneously hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts. Double Dippin’ As “Choosin’ Texas” and “Be Her” held at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, on the Hot 100 on charts dated May 6 and 23, Langley became the first artist known for primarily recording country music in the chart’s 67-year history to simultaneously occupy the list’s top two spots for multiple weeks.
