The party did not publicly disclose the reason for his expulsion. In a release issued late on Friday, AIMIM joint secretary SA Hussain Anwar said, “Mirza Rahmath Baig has been expelled from AIMIM with immediate effect. He must immediately submit his resignation to the Chairman of the Legislative Council.”Rao on Saturday claimed that the allegations against Baig related to the “sexual harassment” of a minor girl. He said Baig was caught sexually assaulting a minor and questioned why the issue had not come to light earlier. Rao said the issue had surfaced long ago and argued that simply expelling Baig from the party now to “wash hands off” the matter was unacceptable. He demanded strict legal action against the MLC and an impartial investigation into the allegations. The Telangana BJP chief also questioned the Congress and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), alleging that the two parties had supported Baig’s election as an MLC. He asked why the Congress and BRS, which came together to elect Baig by defeating the BJP candidate, had remained silent over the allegations. Rao demanded that the Congress and BRS break their silence, answer the public and ensure a comprehensive investigation to establish the truth and deliver justice to the alleged victim. He also called for an inquiry into whether Baig had faced similar allegations or cases in the past. Rao further alleged that several AIMIM leaders had been involved in similar incidents, but he did not provide details or evidence to substantiate the claim. The allegations have raised questions over the reasons behind Baig’s sudden expulsion from the AIMIM, as the party has not so far publicly disclosed the grounds for its action. The development also comes days after Baig approached the cyber crime police in Hyderabad. On August 27, he lodged a complaint alleging that unidentified persons had recently called him demanding money and threatened to defame him by circulating deepfake videos and morphed videos and photographs. Police registered a case based on his complaint.- EndsWith inputs from PTI.Published By: Akshat TrivediPublished On: Aug 30, 2026 08:07 IST
