Teen dies by suicide, family says shamed by teacher after comparing his marks

A 17-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide in Telangana after being humiliated by a school teacher over his academic performance. The incident took place in the Jogulamba Gadwal district.The teenager was a second-year Intermediate (equivalent to Class 12 in a standard 10+2 school system) student at a government-run junior college.According to his family, the boy, who was pursuing the BiPC (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry) stream, had secured 434 out of 440 marks in his first-year Intermediate (Class 11) examinations and ranked second in the district.The incident occurred after a woman lecturer allegedly compared the teenager's marks with those of another student who had scored one mark more, per a complaint lodged with the police. It claims that when the boy objected to being compared to a fellow student in front of the whole class, the lecturer humiliated and slapped him. Police said the boy did not attend college for two days after the alleged episode.On Tuesday, he was found dead at his residence after allegedly dying by suicide while being alone at home. A purported suicide note has also been recovered from the scene. The letter suggests he took the extreme step due to the humiliation he faced and appealed to teachers to encourage students rather than insult them. The police have registered a case, invoking Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment of suicide) against the teacher.The authenticity and contents of the note are also part of the probe launched by the police.
