Teachers to strike again as pay negotiations stall

Victorian teachers, principals and education support staff will prepare to walk off the job for the third time, after a union vote to escalate their campaign for better pay and conditions.The Australian Education Union council met on Friday to decide on its next steps after a stall in negotiations with the Labor government, voting for a 24-hour statewide strike on August 19 unless they receive a satisfactory pay offer.Victorian president Justin Mullaly said it was unacceptable that union members’ concerns had not been adequately addressed after more than a year of bargaining.Deputy premier slams teacher strike (Thumbnail)Nine NewsMullaly said Premier Ben Carroll could not call Victoria the education state when its public schools were the lowest funded in the country.“How can you call Victoria ‘the education state’ when our teachers, principals and education support staff are overworked and undervalued?” he said.“The answer is you can’t.“And we will continue our campaign for a pay and conditions offer that values and respects the work of AEU members.”More to come.The Market Recap newsletter is a wrap of the day’s trading.
