John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) faced plenty of enemies in Yellowstone, but his ancestors' nemesis in 1923 was the vilest villain the Dutton family ever faced. In Yellowstone season 5, John was murdered by mercenaries hired by Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) and Market Equities. Yet it could be said that John's death was the cost of doing 'business,' although Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) took their vengeance for their father's murder personally. After 1883's depiction of how the Dutton family settled in Paradise Valley, Montana, and came to control the largest ranch in the United States, many opponents came after the Duttons, coveting their land. Yellowstone's five seasons were about John, Beth, Kayce, and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) taking on out-of-state developers like Dan Jenkins (Danny Huston) and the deep pockets and corporate guile of Market Equities. However, Yellowstone's first greedy tycoon who nearly stole Paradise Valley from the Duttons was in 1923. 34 years before John Dutton III was born, the cruelest villain the Duttons have faced (to date) attacked the Yellowstone and its stewards, Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), before the ranch was saved by their heroic nephew, Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), on March 29, 1924. Yellowstone’s Most Evil Villain Was 1923’s Donald Whitfield Image via Paramount+ Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) was in a class of his own as a Yellowstone villain. The British-born Whitfield was a mining tycoon who financially backed sheep farmer Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) in his feud with Jacon Dutton. Soon, Whitfield revealed his aspirations to take control of the Yellowstone, and he put his considerable resources at work to destroy the Duttons and turn Paradise Valley into a ski resort. Donald wasn't just a bad man, he was odious and morally reprehensible. Whitfield's dignified public panache was a disguise for his wanton cruelty and taste for sadomasochism. Behind closed doors, Donald had a penchant for torturing prostitutes and making them disfigure each other. Whitfield found a protégé in Lindy (Madison Elise Rogers), who shared Donald's proclivities, and tortured Mabel (Virginia Garner), another prostitute they pulled into their sick web. Timothy Dalton's credentials as a former James Bond actor added to Donald Whitfield's menace as the harbinger of every future scoundrel who wanted to take the Yellowstone from the Duttons. Whitfield wasn't just wealthy, he was cunning, devious, resourceful, and outmatched Jacob and Cara Dutton. Until Spencer's brute force arrived to turn the tide, Donald nearly won. However, Whitfield was so perverse that even Creighton could no longer justify working for such a man. 1923 was riddled with some of the most despicable adversaries that Taylor Sheridan could dream up, including several heels who kept Spencer apart from his wife, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer). Though they weren't after the Duttons, Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent's (Jamie McShane) violent pursuit of Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) proved how repugnant they were. Yet Donald Whitfield still takes the cake. Donald Whitfield Created One Of The Duttons’ Worst Weapons Image via Paramount+ 1923 retconned Donald Whitfeld's true legacy, which lasted long after the Duttons had forgotten his name. 1923 season 2 revealed that it was Donald and Banner who discovered a lawless section between Montana and Wyoming that they could use to dispose of evidence and the corpses of their enemies. This would come to be known in Yellowstone as the Train Station. In the decades between 1923 and Yellowstone, the Duttons learned of and began using the Train Station themselves. The Train Station was the last stop for the Duttons' vanquished enemies, including Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley). It was also the punishment for ranch hands who broke their word to the Yellowstone. Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) planned to send Walker (Ryan Bingham) to the Train Station before Kayce spared his life. Donald Whitfield's revelation as the original mastermind behind the Train Station in 1923 belies how far the 21st-century Duttons had fallen from the moral high ground in Yellowstone. Violence was always part and parcel of keeping the Yellowstone, but John Dutton III behaved as a law unto himself. John committed countless crimes and sent many souls to the Train Station. Dutton even became Montana's governor, and his sole agenda was to use his power to protect his ranch. Whether or not he knew of Donald Whitfield in 1923, John Dutton made regular use of one of Whitfield's creations. The poetic justice is that Dutton wielded the kind of violence Whitfield planned to inflict on his ancestors to dispatch many of his enemies in Yellowstone. 1923 is streaming on Paramount+ Release Date 2022 - 2025-00-00 Network Paramount+ Showrunner Taylor Sheridan Directors Guy Ferland Writers Taylor Sheridan Franchise(s) Yellowstone Creator(s) Taylor Sheridan
