Taylor Sheridan's Marshals Is Changing Kayce Dutton's Role In Season 2

The hit Yellowstone spinoff, which is executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, already changed Kayce's world significantly with the death of Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille). Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce, and Brecken Merrill, who plays Kayce's son Tate, have had to navigate difficult scenes as their characters cope with an unimaginable loss. It's been different for both characters. Tate's relationship with Kayce has improved in Marshals season 2, but he's looking ahead to the freedom he'll achieve once he turns 18. Meanwhile, Kayce has lost his wife. His love life understandably has been a non-starter for viewers and within the show itself, but that is finally changing. Marshals cast member Ash Santos offered a preview of how Kayce's relationship with Andrea is evolving in season 2, telling Us Weekly in an interview that “there’s little hints [about them] that are put in the script now with the writing.” Santos, who portrays Andrea, explains in the quote below how the characters are beginning to see each other differently and how even she didn't quite see the connection at first: “I didn’t see it at first. When I first got the role, I didn’t realize and I really wanted to stay with that because I think it gets complicated when you’re playing a character if you know everything that’s going to happen in the future. It’s kind of nice to just let yourself be surprised as if it is your life. So with Andrea and Kayce, the connection between them in season 2 grows even deeper because he is the only person that she truly lets in to what she’s learning about her father because she knows he’s the only one that can relate because he’s gone through the same thing with John Dutton.” Santos also pulled back the curtain on more scenes with Grimes in the near future, noting that her Marshals co-star will appear in the upcoming storyline that takes Andreato New York. She pointed to one specific scene, seemingly taking place in episode 15, and expressed her excitement for viewers to watch it unfold: The way he volunteers to come to New York with her and really stands by her, she can really lean on him. That’s just so special for any friendship. There’s a scene at the end of episode 15 that I won’t say anything about but we filmed it [recently] and the Manhattan skyline was in front of us and we were on the water and it was night time and we were under like the Brooklyn Bridge and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is stunning! The fans are gonna love this.' Elsewhere in the interview, Santos praises Grimes and his approach to the material, saying in part: “He is an incredible scene partner because he’s always so honest and he brings so much depth to his work.” That may be a big part of why the spinoff quickly gave its lead new potential love interests. It began with Dolly Weaver (played by Ellyn Jameson), though Marshals killed her off after her duplicity was revealed. Dolly perished instantly in a car crash. Her father, Tom Weaver (played by Chris Mulkey), attempts to speed off after kidnapping Tate, and it ends brutally. Kayce reacts fairly indifferently after the father-daughter duo endangered his son, proving that Dolly was never meant to be the main Marshals love interest. Andrea, being a series regular, has a much better chance of changing Kayce's role and bringing him back to the dating world. Rearrange the movies into the correct US release order. As for why the CBS drama doesn't feature Monica to begin with, there have been the usual reasons given about wanting a fresh start and new writing challenges. Reports have also indicated that Marshals was incentivized to kill off Monica to avoid potential legal issues with making the spinoff a direct Yellowstone spinoff, given the complicated franchise rights between Peacock and Paramount. Executive producer Spencer Hudnut and Grimes have both expressed openness to Asbille returning as Monica, be it in flashbacks or dream sequences, but Grimes added that a Monica Dutton cameo seems unlikely. For now, Marshals is looking ahead. Marshals season 2 returns with new episodes on Sunday, November 15 at 8 PM ET on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
