Taylor Sheridan's CBS Show Confirms Its Status As Yellowstone's Sequel

Taylor Sheridan's new show on CBS has confirmed its status as the sequel to Yellowstone that fans have been waiting years to see. Since the ending of Yellowstone in 2024, fans of the show have eagerly been awaiting a continuation of the surviving Duttons' stories. Taylor Sheridan, however, hasn't been very interested in Yellowstone since then. Instead, he's turned his sights to continuing or starting new standalone shows like Landman and Lioness. Sheridan has, however, been involved in two follow-ups to Yellowstone, albeit only as an executive producer who isn't involved with the shows creatively. Those shows, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, haven't been exactly what fans were expecting out of a Yellowstone sequel. Marshals changes Yellowstone's formula completely, opting instead for a weekly police procedural, while Dutton Ranch changed Beth and Rip's characters to be more subdued and less like themselves. With two Yellowstone sequels already airing, the chances of getting a proper sequel to Sheridan's best show seemed to be diminishing. Many of Sheridan's upcoming projects are moving even further away from Yellowstone, after all, like his upcoming Call of Duty movie. A new trailer for Marshals season 2 has, however, proven that it can finally be the sequel that Yellowstone deserves and that fans have been waiting for. Marshals Season 2's Trailer Confirms Kayce Will Be Dealing With The Dutton Legacy The first trailer for Marshals season 2 has teased several new developments for Kayce and Tate Dutton as well as Kayce's team of U.S. Marshals. More importantly, the trailer also teased that Marshals season 2 is going to lean more heavily into its legacy as a sequel to Yellowstone. That's mainly going to be accomplished by having Kayce confront the Dutton family legacy, something he and other characters allude to several times in the trailer. Marshals season 2 premieres on Sunday, October 4 on CBS. The Marshals season 2 trailer had Kayce reflect on how the Dutton legacy is about "always having to fight," and it gave viewers a few glimpses at the fights the new season has in store for him. Tom Weaver is once again gunning for Kayce's land at the Yellowstone's East Camp, even going as far as to send lawyers and hired muscle to intimidate him in his home. Clearly, Kayce is going to have to confront the legacy and generational "curse" the Duttons have in Marshals season 2. Confronting the family's legacy is also exactly what Marshals needed to feel more like a sequel to Yellowstone. Season 1 felt like Kayce going on to do something new, while the trailer for season 2 is painting it as an exploration of how Kayce handles the ghosts of the past and the legacy of his family name. Marshals season 2 is heavily focused on the Duttons, the remnants of the ranch's land, and the same kind of conflicts that defined Yellowstone, making it a perfect sequel. Kayce Is Taking On John Dutton's Role In Marshals Season 2 The biggest way Marshals season 2's trailer has revealed that it's a sequel to Yellowstone is through Kayce himself, specifically in the way he relates to his father, John Dutton. Based on that trailer, it seems like Kayce is taking on almost the same role John filled in Yellowstone. Like his father, Kayce is stubbornly hanging onto the land that is his generational birthright even as very powerful forces conspire to intimidate or kill him for it. Also like John, Kayce's family is paying the price for his refusal to give up his land. Tate was famously kidnapped at the end of Marshals season 1, and the trailer for season 2 already teased that he'd have to kill an attacker in his own home. That kind of threat to Tate's safety and innocence is exactly the kind of thing Kayce used to hate John for in Yellowstone, and now he's the cause of it in Marshals. This newest trailer has put all the pieces in place for Marshals season 2 to become, essentially, Yellowstone season 6. The fate of what remains of the ranch hangs in the balance, Kayce has taken on John's role as patriarch, and the Dutton family legacy is going to be at the forefront of the show. Even the format seems to be changing from episodic cases to a more long-form focus on Tom Weaver. After two years of waiting, Marshals is finally giving fans the Yellowstone sequel they wanted to see from the start.
