Taylor Sheridan's 'Call of Duty' Movie Drops First Official Plot Details

But this next project is certainly one of the most ambitious yet, and now we know a lot more about what's sure to be the biggest and loudest movie on 2028. Director Peter Berg revealed during Fanatics Fest that the upcoming Call of Duty movie will be set in the Modern Warfare universe, answering at least one question fans had — so no Black Ops guns in space, and no World at War then. The movie also reunites Berg with Taylor Sheridan, who is co-writing and producing the adaptation, after the pair previously collaborated on Hell or High Water and Wind River, while Paramount Pictures and Activision are producing the long-awaited video game movie. No cast members have yet been officially announced but would anyone be surprised to see a Mark Wahlberg type rock up? What is 'Modern Warfare' About? The original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare arrived in 2007 and shifted the series away from its World War II roots, and it was revolutionary for video game shooters, as it brought in international terrorism, covert operations and, to be frank, cooler weapons. It also introduced us to characters like Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, Ghost, and Gaz, all of whom we'd expect to see in the film at some point. The game’s success led to two direct sequels before Activision rebooted the subseries in 2019. That gives Berg and the film’s creative team two different versions of the Modern Warfare timeline to draw from. The movie could adapt the original trilogy, use characters from the rebooted games, or combine familiar elements into a separate cinematic continuity. Our preference would be Modern Warfare II but the infamous 'No Russian' sequence would probably be extremely difficult to pull off in this day and age. Berg has considerable experience with military and large-scale action material. His previous films include Lone Survivor, Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon, and Mile 22, making him a natural fit. The film will open in theatres on June 30, 2028.
