Taylor Sheridan Officially Finds The Next Hit Crime Thriller To Rival Reacher & MobLand

While Reacher and MobLand might be dominating the crime thriller streaming scene right now, Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming spinoff series could be the perfect show to decimate their reign. Even though Sean Bean’s underrated BBC crime drama This City Is Ours is arguably the darker, grittier alternative to this streaming hit, there is no denying the fact that Guy Ritchie’s starry mafia drama MobLand is a huge hit with viewers and critics alike. Not only was the first season of MobLand a historically huge ratings success for its streaming service Paramount+, but the show’s sophomore outing went on to enjoy some of the best reviews of Ritchie’s career. Critics hailed MobLand season 2 as one of the director’s best efforts since the heady early days of ‘90s classics like Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, though they were quick to note that MobLand season 2’s critical success stems from a sense of maturity that those earlier, flashier crime comedies lacked. Clearly, it would take a lot for a new show to unseat MobLand as one of streaming’s most successful crime thrillers. There are a handful of elite titles that can compete with the series, such as Prime Video’s acclaimed Reacher franchise. Starring Alan Ritchson as the titular hulking soldier of fortune, Reacher adapts author Lee Child’s cult series of bestsellers into one of the most popular thrillers on streaming. Reacher’s critical acclaim is even more impressive than MobLand season 2’s reception, but Tulsa King creator Taylor Sheridan’s spinoff Frisco King could still outdo both shows soon. Frisco King Has Everything It Needs To Compete With Shows Like Reacher & MobLand Via MovieStillsDB Starring Sylvester Stallone as Dwight "The General" Manfredi, a New York gangster sent to Tulsa to establish a criminal empire, Tulsa King began in 2022 and has lasted three successful seasons so far. Although the show isn’t an unambiguous critical hit, Tulsa King has consistently proven successful with audiences, and the series has one thing that many of even Sheridan’s most famous shows are sorely missing. Compared to the relentlessly downbeat and dour prison drama Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King is a lot of fun, with a much-needed sense of humor and swagger that provides comic relief between bouts of bloody action. While the show features the same flashes of brutality as almost all of Sheridan’s shows, save for The Madison, Tulsa King offsets its darkness with a winking charm that reassures viewers not to take proceedings too seriously. This approach has clearly worked well, with Tulsa King’s season 2 premiere breaking Paramount+ records upon arrival on the streaming service. In fact, the series has proven so successful that Tulsa King spawned not only a fourth season renewal, but also an upcoming spinoff titled Frisco King that will see Samuel L. Jackson reprise his role as the mob hitman Russell Lee Washington Jr. Since Russell refused to kill Dwight despite the mob ordering a hit on him, returning to his hometown of New York is no longer an option. Taylor Sheridan's Spinoff Record Is A Positive Sign For Frisco King CBS Thus, Frisco King will instead see Russell now relocate to San Francisco to start up his own criminal empire, replicating the fish-out-of-water crime comedy setup of Tulsa King with a new iconic star in a new unexpected location. If Yellowstone’s franchise success is any indication, viewers can bet that this Samuel L. Jackson will soon be a major streaming hit that can rival MobLand and Reacher. After all, Sheridan’s humble Neo-Western family saga, Yellowstone, spawned not only the two prequel shows 1883 and 1923, but also the two sequel shows Dutton Ranch and Marshals, both of which have since been renewed for second seasons. Yellowstone’s third prequel, 1944, is also in the works, and this is without even mentioning Sheridan’s many, many other shows. Love his work or hate them, viewers would be foolish to bet against Sheridan’s Tulsa King spinoff Frisco King considering his track record.
