Task Season 2 Release Date Gets Disappointing New Update From HBO CEO

The Emmy-winning Task season 1 starred the MCU's Ruffalo as the head of a special FBI team assembled to stop a crew of robbers responsible for violently taking down a series of drug houses around Philadelphia. Brad Ingelsby’s Mare of Easttown follow-up achieved its own critical acclaim, and just saw cast member Tom Pelphrey snag an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. It’s already been confirmed that the Emmy-nominated Ruffalo will be back for Task season 2, with Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali joining the cast. When exactly Ruffalo and Ali will hit HBO Max for new episodes of Task has not yet been revealed, and the latest update from HBO CEO Casey Bloys isn’t an encouraging one for impatient fans, who may have to wait until late 2027 at the earliest. “They’re shooting, they’re about halfway through,” Bloys confirmed at an Emmys after-party (via Deadline), but when asked if season 2 would hit screens in time to be eligible for next year’s Emmys, Bloys said it will “probably be out” of the June 1, 2026 through May 31, 2027 window, pushing back a potential premiere date to the latter part of next year. Task season 2 was confirmed to be happening back in November 2025, with Ingelsby returning as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Harry Melling is among the new cast members announced for Task season 2, and the actor indeed seems thrilled by the opportunity to team with Ruffalo and Ali, telling ScreenRant in a September 2026 interview, “What a cast of people, and it is a very rich world. Brad Ingelsby is just the most incredible writer of characters. He's just impeccable. So I'm very, very excited to be a part of this. Early days though, with it, about two months into shoot." Even more thrilling for fans of Ingelsby’s previous HBO hit Mare of Easttown is the news that Julianne Nicholson will join Task season 2, reprising the role of Lori Ross, and thereby setting up an official Mare of Easttown-Task crossover.
