Task Meets Supernatural In AMC’s 4-Part Mystery Thriller With A Perfect RT Score

AMC has a mystery thriller series with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes across all its seasons that combines the very best elements of both Task and Supernatural, and all four seasons are available to stream on Netflix. Mystery thrillers are some of the most popular genres on television, and the category has inspired a huge variety of shows over the years. Supernatural and Task exemplify just how much variety the mystery thriller genre has. Normally, a mystery thriller or police procedural will pick one end of the spectrum to focus on. Some shows, like The X-Files and Grimm, fit neatly next to Supernatural's more paranormal premise. Others, like True Detective and The Wire, lean for the more grounded and gritty approach that made Task what it is. Either way, some of the best mystery shows ever made fall into one of these two categories. Very few shows try to offer a blend of what Task and Supernatural have to offer, largely because they're so different from one another. It's hard to reconcile the paranormal monsters and folklore of Supernatural with the hard-boiled and realistic police work in Task. One show, however, does it exceptionally well: AMC's Dark Winds. Plus, with four seasons already on Netflix and a fifth on the way, Dark Winds is perfect for mystery thriller fans. Dark Winds Is A Gritty Police Procedural Like Task Michael Moriatis / AMC Gritty crime dramas aren't hard to come by, especially in the age of streaming services, but few of them are as good as Dark Winds and Task. It's remarkable how many of the same features Task shares with Dark Winds. Both present a season-long mystery that starts out as fairly simple only to grow into a major criminal conspiracy. Both take place in rural parts of America, both primarily follow a complicated lawman with a strained personal life, and both are excellent. In broad strokes, Dark Winds and Task are very similar, but they get even more similar the closer you look. Dark Winds' Joe Leaphorn also has a mysterious and tragic death in his family prior to the show's beginning, just as Tom Brandis does in Task. Both shows are also propelled by a stellar supporting cast of actors that add to the story's mystery and personal drama. They even both feel the same to watch, with their dark cinematography granting each show an almost spooky, tense vibe. What really unites Task and Dark Winds, however, is their quality. These are two of the best crime dramas currently releasing new episodes. Both of them lay out their complicated mysteries in such a way that every episode will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering where the investigation will go next. They're dark, gritty, emotional, and suspenseful in all the right ways. If you liked Task, you're going to like Dark Winds. Supernatural, especially in its earlier seasons, gained a lot of notoriety for pitting Sam and Dean against several monsters and demons from various cultures' folklore and mythology. Dark Winds does much the same with Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernadette, but it draws almost exclusively from Navajo folklore. Across its four seasons, the cast of Dark Winds has had to deal with pieces of Navajo mythology made real, including bad medicine, ghost sickness, and a mythical monster known as the Ye'iitsoh. Dark Winds, admittedly, takes a much more subtle approach to its folklore than Supernatural does. The monsters of the earlier show are very much so real, while Dark Winds walks the line between myth and psychology, and it walks that line quite well. Dark Winds is great for both Supernatural fans and folklore or myth enthusiasts in general, and it may actually offer something Supernatural doesn't. Dark Winds is made by a primarily Native American cast and crew, and it dives very deep into Navajo culture. Supernatural spends a lot more time on Christian and Western theology and myth, so Dark Winds could be a way to watch an entirely new kind of paranormal mystery.
