Tamil Nadu man slaps wife in public. She sets herself, 2 sons on fire; all die

A 28-year-old woman in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi set her two young sons on fire before dying by self-immolation after her husband allegedly slapped and humiliated her in public, police said. The two children also died in the incident.According to police, Mariammal had taken her two sons, Kabineswaran, 6, and Rabineswaran, 4, to a nearby temple to attend a traditional dance festival.Her husband, Kalipandi, arrived at the temple festival in an allegedly drunken state and slapped her in front of others.Following the incident, Mariammal returned home with her two children. Police said she then locked the doors, set her sons on fire and doused herself with kerosene before setting herself ablaze. Mariammal and both her sons died in the incident.Tamil Nadu police have registered a case and are questioning Kalipandi. Police said he was a frequent drinker and that an investigation was underway to ascertain the circumstances that led to the deaths. - Ends
