But his hopes of adding the Vuelta a Espana to his glittering CV ended dramatically when he crashed out of the race on stage eight on August 29. Sign up for the Sport newsletter Thank you! Pogacar was wearing the race leader’s red jersey and held a commanding advantage of almost four minutes when he came off his bike with just over 30km of the stage remaining. The terrible accident left him with a displaced fracture of his left collarbone, a stable fracture to the C7 vertebra in his neck and a concussion, as well as cuts and abrasions. Pogacar was reportedly taking a drink from his bottle and had only one hand on the handlebars when he lost control at high speed and crashed heavily. He was taken to hospital and subsequently underwent successful surgery on his damaged collarbone. The five-time Tour champion has now shown fans his recovery progress on Instagram, posting footage of himself back on a bike as he continues his rehabilitation. His partner and fellow professional cyclist Urska Zigart is recovering from a fractured jaw, and was with him in the video.
