Taboo Season 2’s Official Confirmation Begins A New Era For Tom Hardy

Published Oct 2, 2026, 2:31 PM EDT After 18 months at Screen Rant, Guy became Classic TV Editor in September 2026, and specializes in leading features content about shows from decades gone by. Having written for and editing several TV, film and music publications, his areas of expertise include comedy, crime, historical drama, Westerns, and political thrillers. Tom Hardy’s career is now at the start of a new era, after the actor officially confirmed the return of his historical thriller series Taboo. Hardy created the series himself, alongside his father, screenwriter Chips Hardy, and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. It debuted on the BBC and FX back in 2017, to an overwhelmingly positive audience response and largely favorable reviews. The show looked set to become the next Peaky Blinders in the younger Hardy and Knight’s respective careers, especially after it was renewed for a second season nine years ago. Yet, Taboo season 2 has stalled ever since, primarily due to scheduling conflicts, and the pressure to outdo season 1 that Hardy, in particular, has felt. His confirmation that follow-up episodes are finally in the works will be music to the ears of fans who’ve been waiting patiently for news of James Keziah Delaney’s next adventure. Although there isn’t a timeline for the show’s return at this stage, we should expect an announcement sooner rather than later. With the filming of MobLand season 3, Hardy’s other ongoing TV project, due to begin before the end of this year, it could be that the actor has some time freed up for making the next season of Taboo in the middle of 2027. Meanwhile, Knight is busy working on other series for the time being, but he’s long since made a habit of spinning plates. Tom Hardy Has Officially Confirmed That Taboo Season 2 Is Happening Tom Hardy confirmed season 2 of Taboo last month, during an interview with Pop Drop to promote the second season of MobLand, first published on September 18. When a question was put to Hardy about this new season of his historical crime series set in the early 19th century, his answer was definitive. He responded as follows: “That is happening, yeah. I keep saying that as well but I want to go back to it. “That's something that I'm very passionate about, so we're scribbling away. Because it's been so long since we did it, there's a kind of pressure to do something epic with it when it comes back. “I loved doing the first one so much, because we poured so much of [ourselves into it], that it's become a sort of special project that I'm a bit worried about messing with. It's going to need risk-taking.” Regardless of Steven Knight’s work on new installments of his other TV shows A Thousand Blows and House of Guinness, then, it sounds very much as though the scripts for Taboo season 2 are being written as we speak. As expected, the season’s plot appears to feature direct input from Hardy, which is consistent with previous comments from Knight. From Hardy’s latest update, it’s clear that the delay in Taboo’s return isn’t simply down to incompatible production schedules. The show’s lead actor and co-creator has been wary of rushing into season 2 without the right story, because he wants this follow-up to do season 1 justice. At the same time, he acknowledges that building on what Taboo has already accomplished necessarily involves a leap of faith, not least because of the dramatic turn of events that concluded the previous season. What comes next is far from certain, but one thing is for sure. Tom Hardy expects it to be “epic”. Taboo Season 2 Could Be Very Different From The Show’s First Season According to Steven Knight’s previous update about Taboo season 2 in January 2026, he and Hardy have already discussed how they plan to continue James Delaney’s story. In fact, during an interview with Esquire back in 2021, Hardy revealed that he’d already come up with a particularly outlandish idea for the new season. It involved a time jump which placed later generations of the Delaney family in a whole new jungle setting, against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. In the actor’s words, “It’s still Taboo, it’s still period, but it’s the Sixties.” Whether this is the road he and Knight are actually going down remains to be seen. Either way, Hardy’s most recent comments about the show have highlighted the challenges involved in returning to it almost 10 years after the release of its first season, especially in light of such an open-ended season finale. As a result, he’s explained the extent to which he and Taboo’s writers been toying with different ideas about what to do next: “If you've given it a decade since it was out, [the directions it could go in] have multiplied, and I've obviously gotten older, and better looking, and all that kind of stuff – and gray, and bald. So is it even me playing [Delaney]? Is it the son? You know, there's all kinds of elements to play with, and it's just stuff that I like playing with, really.” Even if Tom Hardy and Steven Knight don’t jump forward 150 years for Taboo season 2, there’s no doubt that it’s going to have a very different story from its 2017 forerunner. The most important thing, though, is that – at long last – it’s happening. Alongside MobLand season 3, this new season of Taboo represents for Hardy as a lead performer on the small screen. Release Date 2017 - 2017-00-00 Network BBC One Showrunner Steven Knight In the wake of his father's death in 1814, British businessman James Delaney returns to England, having spent the past twelve years in Africa. With little to his name, he sets about trying to reclaim his inheritance, against the gritty backdrop of 19th century London.
