The Sneaky Hitchcock Remake Nicely Set Up Sweeney's Biggest Hit As previously noted, when it was first released, The Voyeurs wasn't the most well-loved by critics, many of whom were torn on whether to appreciate its Hitchcockian influences or find it derivative of them. With its neighbor-spying premise, most drew comparisons to 1954's Rear Window, while the erotic elements of the Prime Video title also sparked comparisons to Brian De Palma's Body Double, which itself was a direct collection of Hitchcock homages. Sweeney's R-rated thriller isn't the only film to leave audiences torn over how closely it veered to one of Hitchcock's works. The Shia LaBeouf-starring Disturbia found itself viewed so closely to that of Rear Window that The Sheldon Abend Revocable Trust, itself created after an infamous 1990 Supreme Court case regarding the 1954 film, filed a lawsuit against Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks, Viacom and Universal Studios over copyright infringement tied to the short story Hitchcock adapted. The claim was dismissed on the grounds of both Disturbia and Cornell Woolrich's short story sharing broad similarities rather than direct copy. Beyond its Hitchcockian influences, The Voyeurs marked a notable chapter for Sweeney in that it, and fellow Prime Video thriller Nocturne, served as her first proper shifts into leading star territory after her breakout success with Euphoria. In many ways, the 2021 film also acted as the perfect setup for her eventual turn as The Housemaid's Millie, giving her the same moral complexities mixed in a twist-filled steamy package that made her adaptation of Freida McFadden's novel a record-breaking hit at the box office.
