Long before she became a movie star, Sydney Sweeney was the stealth lead in the final film from one of horror's greatest directors. That filmmaker would be Mr John Carpenter, who changed horror forever with the original Halloween and went on one of the best runs of any filmmaker. The Kurt Russell and John Carpenter collaborations alone yielded classics like The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China. The director even gave Jason Statham his first action role in Ghosts of Mars, which quietly proved an important film for Carpenter. Feeling burned out from decades of constant work and disillusioned with Ghosts of Mars flopping in 2001, he largely stepped away from filmmaking. Still, fan demand for more John Carpenter movies saw him saddle up the horse one last time for The Ward. This grisly 2010 psychological chiller cast Amber Heard as a young woman committed to a psychiatric hospital in the 1960s, where a vengeful spirit haunts her and the other patients. Despite being pitched as a Carpenter comeback, it failed to recoup its modest $10 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and received lukewarm reviews. In hindsight, the film is most notable for giving Sydney Sweeney her second movie role, at age 13. The Ward's Ending Reveals Sydney Sweeney Was The Real Main Character The big twist of The Ward is that Amber Heard's Kristen, and all the other young ladies being attacked by the ghost, are actually figments of a young girl's imagination. Jared Harris' psychiatrist reveals that Sydney Sweeney's Alice created the five ladies as a way to deal with a traumatic kidnapping she endured, but these alternate personas had become so dominant in her mind that Alice created a ghost version of herself to "kill" them off. In essence, Alice is The Ward's real protagonist, even if Sweeney doesn't have much screentime. In the past, Carpenter has shown an uncanny knack at picking future stars, be it Jamie Lee Curtis in the original Halloween or giving Keith David his first-ever movie role in The Thing. The same is true for Sweeney in The Ward, as the young actor had barely any credits when he cast her as the secret main character. For those curious about The Ward, the film is currently streaming on Prime, in addition to other platforms like Shudder and Pluto TV. While it never touches the greatness of Carpenter's best work, it is a solid horror outing with some solid performances and a welcome dose of humor. With the film, Carpenter aimed to tell a contained, creepy little ghost story, and he succeeded in that modest goal. John Carpenter Quietly Retired From Directing After The Ward Carpenter helmedThe Ward as it was a contained project with a small cast, and to test the waters of making a comeback. Ultimately, the experience didn't satisfy the filmmaker, and while he has attached himself to different projects since, he hasn't made a film in 16 years and counting. Instead, he has focused on his other major passion: music. Carpenter and his collaborators (including son Cody) have put together many music albums, including four Lost Themes records. While John Carpenter is famed for composing most of his own scores, the soundtrack for The Ward was created by Mark Kilian. Carpenter also scored all three of David Gordon Green's Halloween sequels for Blumhouse. He has flirted with directing further movies, including an adaptation of the comic Darkchylde and the horror Western The Benders, none of which have come to pass. There is still time for Carpenter to cast off his retirement and helm one more film, but as of 2026, it appears The Ward will be remain his final directing credit. As for Sydney Sweeney, she often revisited the horror genre, including the very well-received Immaculate from 2024 and the much less acclaimed Giant Killer Ants from 2017. One of her next projects will be the gothic horror Hollow, a reimagining of the classic tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
