Sydney Marathon organisers in major blunder after accidentally adding BAYERN MUNICH stadium to 40,000 medals

THE 40,000 Sydney Marathon medals have got Bayern Munich’s stadium on them in a hilarious blunder. The 26.2-mile race takes place in Australia next Sunday. But athletics fans could not help but laugh after the organiser’s major mistake. Sign up for the Sport newsletter Thank you! The design of the gold medals, which will be presented to finishers on August 30, was shared online. However, it quickly went viral for the wrong reasons thanks to eagle-eyed supporters. The front of the medal is a stunning gold and indigo design created by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, featuring 42 horseshoe-shaped patterns to represent the 42.2km distance. On the back, the story of the course route is displayed with the outlines of various Sydney landmarks depicted. That includes starting by the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finishing next to the Sydney Opera House. However, one of the drawings on the right-hand side captured the attention. But the Sydney Marathon actually goes past the Allianz Stadium – a smoother design. The venue is the home of the Sydney Roosters, Sydney FC, NSW Waratahs and South Sydney Rabbitohs – and not to be confused with the home of rugby, with Twickenham in South-West London now renamed the Allianz Stadium, too. Bayern Munich joked: “Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!” One fan quipped: “The tiniest detail caused the biggest problem. Once you see it, you literally can’t unsee it. Someone definitely needed a second look before production.” Another replied: “Imagine running 42km just for a typo on the medal.” And a third quipped: “Running a marathon is hard, but finding the right Allianz Stadium on Google is clearly harder.” Killian distanced himself from the blunder as he was only responsible for the other side. And the Sydney Marathon were forced to release a statement admitting the howler – but took it well. A spokesperson said: “A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finisher’s medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium. “We’re not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error, though it’s certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour. “We’re grateful to our participants and partners for taking it in such good humour, and our focus now is where it should be, on delivering a safe, spectacular and unforgettable weekend.” Sydney joined London, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo as the seventh major – with Cape Town set to be added next year.
