The Supreme Court directed expelled JD(U) MLA Anant Singh to surrender by December 1. The order intensifies scrutiny of the murder investigation and his earlier bail.Newdelhi,Oct 30, 2026 14:52 ISTThe Supreme Court on Friday directed expelled JD(U) MLA Anant Singh to surrender by December 1 in connection with the murder of Dular Chand Yadav, news agency Press Trust of India reported. The court also directed the Bihar Police to complete its investigation within four months while hearing a petition seeking the cancellation of bail granted to Singh by the Patna High Court.Singh was arrested on November 1 last year for allegedly orchestrating Yadav's killing in Bihar in October 2025. The Patna High Court granted him bail on March 19 this year.A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale passed the order and scheduled the next hearing after four months. The JD(U) recently expelled Mokama MLA Singh and former legislator Neelam Devi for six years over alleged anti-party activities. Singh, a former don who entered politics, had revolted against the party by campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh in the recent Bihar Legislative Council elections.Yadav, who was known to be at odds with Singh, was supporting Priyadarshi Piyush, the Jan Suraaj Party's candidate from Mokama in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election. He was killed while campaigning for Piyush in Mokama on October 30 last year. Police had earlier said Yadav's post-mortem report found that he died of cardiorespiratory failure caused by shock after his heart and lungs were injured with a hard and blunt object, PTI reported.During Friday's hearing, the petitioner's lawyer said a senior citizen had been murdered in broad daylight. She argued that Yadav's only fault was that he was campaigning for a rival political party."I am here for cancellation of bail," she said, adding that the petitioner was Yadav's grandson. The lawyer also argued that the High Court had noted in its order that several criminal cases against Singh arose from political rivalry.Singh's lawyer said two accused in the case had been granted anticipatory bail, while two others had received regular bail. He also said the investigation was not complete. When the bench indicated that it was inclined to direct Singh to surrender, his lawyer said Singh's daughter was due to get married on November 25."Give me at least four weeks' time to surrender. I will surrender after that. Let the marriage get over," Singh's lawyer said. The Bihar government's lawyer said a counter-affidavit detailing the status of the investigation had been filed. The bench observed that the High Court was wrong to state that Singh's criminal antecedents arose from political rivalry. The Supreme Court ultimately ordered Singh to surrender on or before December 1 and directed the police to complete the investigation within four months. "The investigation shall be completed within a period of four months from today," it said.- Ends
