Superman Permanently Loses an Eye in DC's Main Continuity (Yes, Really)

After a brutal battle with his nemesis General Zod, DC's Superman just lost an eye, in an injury that the publisher is teasing as a permanent change to the hero's design. DC is currently publishing 'Kingdom of Zod' - an event stretching across comics including Superman, Supergirl, Action Comics and more, and seeing the Kryptonian dictator rise to power as the ruler of an entire kingdom of Kryptonite. While Superman dons a suit of armor to resist the lethal mineral and strike back against Zod, the villain uses Kryptonite claws reminiscent of Marvel's Wolverine to cut through, delivering the coup de grâce with his heat vision. Superman Loses an Eye to General Zod In today's Superman #41 - from Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira and Ulises Arreola - Zod removes Superman's eye with a brutal blast of heat vision. The move leaves Clark Kent reeling, with a smoldering crater where his eye used to be. While Superman's allies are able to rescue him from Zod's grasp, the damage is done, and it seems like this will be a lasting injury for the hero. Fans don't yet know what effect this will have on Superman's own heat vision, but with a Kryptonite virus spreading worldwide, those concerns will have to wait until the threat to Earth can be stopped. Injuries are common in superhero comics, however there's reason to believe that Superman won't get his eye back for a significant amount of time... Why Superman's Latest Injury Is Different As shocking as Superman's latest injury is, it's been coming for a long time. In 2024's Superman #19, Supes encountered the Time Trapper - a future version of his unkillable enemy Doomsday. Time Trapper discussed recent damage to the time stream, and observed, "you still have your right eye... meaning Zod has not returned yet." This unintentional 'prophecy' has now been fulfilled, as Zod's return has indeed cost Superman his eye. However, the fact that Superman could ONLY have his right eye before Zod's return establishes the fact that he will never regain it, at least as DC's timeline currently exists. While the issue ends with Zod ally Ursa and Supergirl being hurled back through the timestream, it's unlikely this event will immediately heal Superman's eye. DC has been setting up this injury for years, so it's likely we'll have a one-eyed Superman for a significant amount of time. Likewise, the damage to the timestream is a major ongoing thread across the DC Universe at the moment, and unlikely to be fixed in this event. Will Superman Ever Regain His Eye? Ultimately, Superman's design is too iconic for DC to remove Kal-El's eye forever, however superheroes often undergo years-long redesigns, and that seems to be what DC is setting up for Superman. With Superman's lasting injury being confirmed via time travel, this is likely to be as 'permanent' as a major injury gets in superhero media. Indeed, if the era featuring Superman's injury is iconic enough then - like Aquaman's severed hand - it's likely to be a design that recurs again and again over the years, differentiating the Superman of 2026 from his past and future selves.
