One driver on the A36 near Besançon in France revealed huge icy hailstones the size of plums on the backseat of his car. They had smashed through his windows while he sat in heavy traffic triggered by the punishing conditions. Supercell storms are massive, spinning thunderstorms that last for several hours and whirl up to heights of ten miles. Whipping up debris as they gust through towns, the gale forces are strong enough to rip up trees and throw branches at cars. One man screamed in fear as a huge branch snapped of a tree and barrelled into his car while he was still inside. Rainwater and hail lashed the carriage and forced commuetrs to flee. “I have never seen this in my life” read a caption on a clip showing a deluge of water battering the scene outside. Meanwhile hailstones the size of golf balls pelted homes in northern Switzerland – with one man watching on in horror as his garden furniture was destroyed in the onslaught. And Italy’s Piedmont and Lombardy regions are set to be lashed by multi threat of heavy rain, lightning strikes hailstorms and powerful winds. Military forecasters warned: “Forecasters said: ‘”Expect some disruption to daily routines and be prepared for disruption to outdoor activities.” It comes after a deadly summer of heatwaves in which 36,000 people are reported to have lost their lives due to the soaring temperatures. Germany counted the greatest death toll at around 14,000 citizens. In the UK, an estimated 2,877 people died in the May and June heatwaves, almost double the excess figure of 2025. Comment now
