Super Mario Sunshine is a complex game, a title best remembered for its striking visuals and novel gameplay mechanics, but ultimately marred by a handful of poor design decisions. That's not to say that Super Mario Sunshine is a bad game, but rather that one's nostalgia for it, at least in my case, does much of the heavy lifting, its vibrant landscapes and cartoonish atmosphere evoking a comforting feeling that feels sorely lacking in today's Unreal Engine-driven industry. Fortunately, the myriad of issues plaguing Super Mario Sunshine have largely been ironed out through fan-made patches and remasters. Such is the case, at least in part, with Super Mario Sunshine 4K, a remaster that, as its title so aptly implies, significantly improves the game's visual fidelity to offer a transformative experience fans are sure to enjoy. It's well worth paying attention to, not least because it helps revitalize a game that, despite its underlying flaws, offers a one-of-a-kind experience the world needs more than ever. Super Mario Sunshine 4K Is The Perfect Remaster Super Mario Sunshine 4K is a texture pack for an emulated copy of the base game that introduces hundreds of 4K textures into the game in an attempt to upscale the visuals and make it a tad more appealing to modern sensibilities. Created by Henriko Magnifico, the texture pack ostensibly serves as a full-blown Super Mario Sunshine remaster, especially as it can be used in conjunction with existing patches, including those that bump up the game's original 30fps framerate. While it doesn't quite iron out the game's underlying issues, it does elevate Super Mario Sunshine's already stunning visuals to transform the game into the experience that you remember it being on your crisp CRT TV. Super Mario Sunshine 4K eschews the pitfalls so commonplace in remastering by avoiding tampering with the game's original aesthetic, instead choosing merely to enhance existing features and style. It works wonders and makes this feel like a definitive patch you simply couldn't do without. Of course, to run Super Mario Sunshine 4K, you'll need to first emulate the game using Dolphin or an equivalent emulator. Naturally, you should have a legally obtained copy of the game before emulating it in order to ensure that you're doing everything above board. However, once obtained, you simply need to download the texture pack from Henriko Magnifico's official website and apply it to the emulator you're using to run Super Mario Sunshine. Super Mario Sunshine 4K Is The Definitive Way To Play This Classic The 4K enhancement may sound insubstantial on paper, but it is not a negligible improvement. Rather, Super Mario Sunshine 4K is the definitive experience that, save for purists who will obviously want to preserve the game's original visual fidelity, is a texture pack that everyone should be using. Had it more directly altered the game's art style or the artistic intention of the developers, then it would be far less easy to recommend on account of it fundamentally changing the intended experience. However, as aforementioned, Super Mario Sunshine 4K avoids such temptations and instead simply enhances what was already there. This is also the closest we'll get to an official remaster, especially considering that, beyond the controversial Super Mario compilation title that Nintendo so swiftly abandoned, Super Mario Sunshine rarely gets much love or attention from Nintendo. Simply put, we're unlikely to see a re-release that elevates the core Super Mario Sunshine gameplay loop any time soon. So, be sure to enjoy this free and phenomenal Super Mario Sunshine texture pack alongside the myriad of other fan-made tweaks that turn Mario's most divisive release into the game it was always meant to be.
