Sign in to your TheGamer account It’s been a pretty good year for Nintendo’s more fringe characters. Not only did we have a new Star Fox game release for the first time in over a decade, but we also got a new Yoshi game too, albeit one more marketed towards Nintendo’s younger audience. Both of these characters were also featured in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie that released earlier this year too, and if you’ve ever wondered whether Nintendo deliberately released a new Star Fox game after Fox’s big screen debut was deliberate, Miyamoto has the answer for you. We Got New Yoshi And Star Fox Games Thanks To Super Mario Galaxy In a recent interview with Famitsu (thanks Nintendo Everything), Miyamoto was asked how Nintendo decides which characters to give games, what with Star Fox, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi all getting high-profile titles recently. It’s during his answer that he revealed the Super Mario Galaxy movie played a big part. “I don’t decide everything about the lineup, but we did discuss that we have an idea to include Fox in the script for the movie, so we definitely want a new Star Fox game,” says Miyamoto. “Sometimes things get decided after we’ve discussed them. We started working on the first Mario movie and Princess Peach Showtime around the same time, and we talked about things like, “If we have this game, shouldn’t Peach be more energetic in the movie too?” It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that’s how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began.” Miyamoto goes on to explain that this is “a case-by-case situation”, but it’s very clear that Nintendo has formed some kind of strategy to release games alongside its big screen productions, which makes a lot of sense. It also makes you wonder exactly what the developer has lined up for when The Legend of Zelda makes its silver screen debut, which is set to release in April 2027. We have the Ocarina of Time remake on the horizon, but that could just be filling the space before we get something even more substantial next year. Only time will tell.
